The Rhineland is still German. Anyway, we received German territory as compensation for their deeds in WWII.
We didn't conquer German land violently.
Actually, you received German lands after World War One, specifically Alsace and Lorraine. Which the Germans took off France in the Franco-Prussian War. Both departements (did I spell that right?) have a mixed French/German speaking population.
