There's a Hell in Michigan in the US, too. I grew up in a town named Winner, it was named that because it won a vote to get the railroad to run through it and make it the county seat.

Washington D.C. Why is stupid? Easy. These Americans are imperialists. For funny names, I heard of Taipei, which sounds like slang for some part. ;)

Nice name, that. Who wouldn't want to live in a town called "Bright"? Some people think that one or more of the American towns called Hell may have got their name from Germans coming over and saying "Ach, so schoene hell...", meaning "Oh, how beautifully bright...". [/geek]

There's a Wetwang in East Yorkshire, England and a Condom in Gers, France.
There's also 'Truth or Consequences' in New Mexico, USA. It's not stupid, just unusual.
Here's why it's called Truth or Consequences:
Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, the title of a popular NBC radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs won the honor. Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May for the next fifty years. This event was called "Fiesta" and included a beauty contest, a parade, and a stage show. The city still celebrates Fiesta each year on the first weekend of May. The parade generally features area celebrities such as the New Mexico Chile Queen. Fiesta also features a dance in Ralph Edwards Park.

We are full of stupid place names here in Ireland: Tubercurry, Ballsbridge, Hacksballscross, Bastardstown are to name a few. We even have a village called Horse and Jockey. But I love our place names, its uniquely Irish and its what makes our country great!

Yes, says so on Wikipedia, just added it.
Also just by coincidence there's a city called Elephant Butte just 5 miles away from Truth or Consequences.

I think I remember flooding in a place called Cockermouth. There's a small coucil flat building called Brown John Court in my town. I 've heard of Dildo in Canada and Middle Intercourse Island near somewhere like Australia. I knew someone from a village called Haseley Knob.

A lot of Japanese place names make very little sense once you translate out the kanji. No one has told me just how a river can stand (立川, or Standing river), or just where those 6 trees are (六本木).
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

Science may provide the means while religion provides the motivation but humanity and humanity alone provides the vehicle -DaWoad

In New Zealand there's a Whakapapa, the reason why this is so stupid is because 'Wh' is pronounced 'F' in Maori.
The picture below me is of the sign marking the end of the village of Y in France, although there's also a Y in Alaska.

every place that, has been renamed after a politician, living or dead, has a stupid place name, and whatever it was first called, the very first thing it was ever called, by whoever first called it anything, is the best name it could possibly have, regardless of how silly, strange or unlikely, that might otherwise be. wouldn't you rather live in a town named hambone, red dog, or wakadok, then one named jacksonville, or george town, or even penn valley? i know i would.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"
