It's not the best sex they could ever possibly have. Its entirely possible that they could have extra-marital sex, or that one spouse could remarry after the death of the other and have better sex with their new spouse. Assuming they only ever have sex with each other, then yes, that's the best sex they'll have. But being a married Mormon doesn't make it impossible to fuck someone other than your spouse.

In all seriousness, though, while the theory makes sense, there are plenty of issues with trying to "study" such a thing. For example, there's no way to tell that the people surveyed - all of whom abandoned their churches - weren't just saying it improved to try to promote atheist viewpoints, or actually believed it did with no proof to back it up (perhaps because the theory makes sense).

Indeed, seems like it would only be valid if one polled a random group comprised equally of people who converted to a religion, people who went apostate, and people who remained as to what they thought of their own sex lives. They have no control group here.

I've heard Taoists have the best sex lives, actually. :P

Unfortunately, your study only measures "sex life improvement" from conversion of one belief system to another. Since it only compares those two systems, you cannot claim that one is "best" merely because the study would show it's better then the other. We'd need a more comprehensive study.

It's probably going to be about as valid as a poll to determine the best color. Good sex is a preference question and it's simply not going to be possible for people that have sex with only one person ever to give an accurate assessment of how good the sex is.

Okay, Mr. Technical-Pants. You're right, it's not the only sex they will ever have necessarily.

But given that the article is about enjoyment increases due to guilt from religion inhibiting pleasure before, it would stand to reason that a devout religious person who believed extra-marital relations were wrong probably would not garner the enjoyment he/she would otherwise, when having sex with his/her spouse. So while it might be new or exciting, his/her love life would still be less fulfilling than if they just stuck with each other.

This is a junk study. These two might be on to something but they certainly did not establish it with this "study". If this was a random sample, then they would have had a more than adequate number of responses. I do not have a problem with a representative sample of 14,500. In fact, that is a great number and these two really busted their butts working through such a large number of surveys.

The main problem that I have with this is that it is self selected. This is not a random sample at all.

I also question why the study was only limited to those survey respondents who left their church. I do not even know what that means. Is someone who converts from one religion to another someone who left their church? Is someone who lost all faith someone who left their church? Is someone who started off as a Lutheran and then became a Presbyterian (I hope I am not offending anyone here but I do not think there is a huge difference between these two faiths) someone who left their church? Would not it make sense to compare these folks (whomever they are) to people who have been in the same faith all of their lives? I guess I am just wondering who the control group is here.

EDIT: I am a religious man with the bias of one. I also sort of question what good sex is from a religious point of view. I certainly do not think that "good sex" can include sexual activities that according to my religious conscience I find to be sinful sexual actions. For example, I suppose that somebody could have a great orgasm after having sex with an animal or close relative but I certainly would not consider those actions to be good sex despite how good it may have felt for all involved.

Yes. It's called 'The Pool Effect'.

When you first jump into a pool, it is often far colder than you would prefer. If you get out of the pool for a few moments, allowing the evaporative heat transfer to remove more heat than the convective heat transfer of the pool itself, then jump back in, the pool SEEMS considerably warmer.

Similarly, a sexual relationship might be fulfilling, but if you become religious and restrict that sexually for a little while, then drop it and go full bore again, it feels that much more amazing!

You know, since all religions must be treated with the same respect and consideration, doesn't that mean that we should have off for ALL religious holidays?

On a similar subject, I've always wondered something. Maybe someone here can answer but nationstates seems to have only a religious minority.

A lot of "good Christians" think sex before marriage is wrong, but what about after marriage? Do they think it's acceptable for a married man and woman to give each other oral? To play with sex toys? To use whips and chains? Or does that piss off God anyway, cause the marital bed is for procreation? This is something I've really wondered. I'd like to ask a priest one day, inside a confessional. I'll just do the whole confession and say "Oh, by the way, answer a theology question for me."

Feigning surprise

Postby Blackjackington » Fri May 27, 2011 9:28 am

Excuse my lack of genuine surprise when I learned that people that don't believe in god have better sex lives then people who don't. I would also have to feign surprise if I heard that their marriages lasted longer as well.
