It's not so much that atheist have a better sex life as when you're in a religion who represses sex and say to that religion "fuck you" that your sex life improves. The papers are reporting the wrong conclusion (colour me surprised).

Not too surprising, sex is fairly taboo in many religious settings and beliefs. Though it is really more cultural than really religious. You tend to find less public displays of affection even between normative partners in that grouping because of the overall cultural stigma still en-grafted into relatively conservative fundamentalist elements of the religion. Once free of the religion they also tend to be free of the culturual hold-out in stigma perpetuated by the older members.

Doesn't effect me personally, I'm religious and quite enjoy my sex life; and can ideologically distingish between elements of actual faith and that of stigmas handed down dogmatically outside of the core religious beliefs.

I wonder how much of this is religious people not finding it appropriate to discuss how much they enjoy their sex life, rather than not enjoying it as much. By and large I would say the devout are more prudish in what they talk about, but not necessarily in what they do behind closed doors.

Even so, general perception of the conservative nature of religious relationships certainly would seem to be supported by this conclusion. Many religions involve bridling the more base of carnal desires in favor of a spiritual experience. As such, sex can become more of a unifying, love-fostering gesture than something you classify as a 'sex life' or past time. That's not to say ALL religious people reach that point, but it's not unreasonable.

The article suggests 'guilt' over having sex inhibiting the ability to enjoy the practice, and the possible reason behind the improvement of the sex lives after leaving religions. That seems a bit foreign to me, as I was raised religious and was never given a line about feeling guilty over sex...unless of course, it was outside of marriage. This is something the article fails to highlight: whether this sex is in marriage or not.

Of course religions who teach premarital sex is wrong are going to make people feel guilty for having it, and if they leave those religions that guilt naturally goes away. You don't need a study for that shit. They need a bit more in-depth analysis to see if it's "being able to have sex outside of marriage guilt-free" that makes it better, or whether not having religion makes sex better overall.

In all seriousness, though, while the theory makes sense, there are plenty of issues with trying to "study" such a thing. For example, there's no way to tell that the people surveyed - all of whom abandoned their churches - weren't just saying it improved to try to promote atheist viewpoints, or actually believed it did with no proof to back it up (perhaps because the theory makes sense).
