Lesser known Punk bands

Postby Americow » Sun Aug 09, 2009 11:24 am

I was wondering if any of you peeps knew anything about any of the more undergorund punk bands. I'm trying to discover some on my own. Please note: Punk is stuff like the Dead Kennedy's, I guess Anti-flag's original stuff too, no Green Day shit or any pop-punk like that. REAL punk. Thanks!

Punk is for kids who're mad at their parents and can't play an instrument, but still want to be in a band.

Crass. Isn't exactly lesser known, but certainly original. Makes the Dead Kennedys seem like pop-stars. Flipper was pretty amazing, although not as original, as were Bad Brains.

The Clovers - Osaka's best J/Celtic punk band - qualifies as pretty obscure I'd say...
Other good J bands: Melt Banana, Genbaku Onanies, Boris

That's the idea that makes Punk great though, 5 chords and drum mashing, with screaming. Sounds great to angst filled teens, or people that like noise.

Some of these are really more hXc than punk, but... I dunno, if you like hard punk you might like them?

Lower Class Brats
Blood Brothers
Give Up the Ghost (used to be: American Nightmare)
Bad Religion
Orchid
Converge
Dillinger Escape Plan
From Autumn to Ashes
The Buzzcocks
Planes Mistaken for Stars
Good Riddance
NOFX
Murder City Devils

EDIT: Whoops... you said lesser known...well, ignore all the well-known ones.

Kids these days! I was going to put in all the old-school stuff like Dead Boys, Minutemen, Rancid, Pennywise, etc. but then I noticed it said "lesser known" (but I was too lazy to take out the ones I'd typed, because I'm...excessively complicated in my laziness?).

I reject the mindset that equates "lesser known" with "better," just as reject that "popular" means "better."

As a fan of punk for several decades who loves many of the "lesser known" groups in this thread, I would also defend Green Day as a decent punk band. The best? No. The most "punk"? No. But a decent and, yes, punk band.
I quit (again).
