Hagia Sophia: Church, Mosque or Museum, your thoughts?

Postby NeoByzantine » Wed May 18, 2011 9:16 am

Over 1000 years ago the great church of Hagia Sophia was built then as Constantinople fell Hagia Sophia was converted to a Mosque and now its a museum. What do u feel it should. And please do not pick your side because you are a radical, but pick the side you truly believe is right

It'd be very dangerous to assume radicals don't believe what they do/think is right. Based on what i think is right, it ought to be a Church. For the sake of all involved, keep it a museum.

I think the current status a a museum is fine.

thats true, let me clarify though, some will same it should be a church just because their a radical when they know it should be a museum for instance. Instead of radical lets say bias ok. btw nice picture

Give it back to Greece, methinks.

I say turn it into a brothel, that way Muslims and Christians can be offended together.

Well there we go. The Muslims can have their special part, the Christians theirs, and if there are some very important parts then the Muslims can have it Fridays and Christians Sundays. There'd probably be enough space and time left for museum use and guided tours as well! Great!

Why? There hasn't been a Christian ceremony in the building since 1453. While I'm no fan of the Turks, they captured it fair and square. Since it's not a mosque any longer, let it stay just a museum.

we, unlike the bourgeoisie, have nothing to lose and therefore our expression will be the only honest one, our words will be the only challenging ones and our art will be the one revolutionary expression. We need new noise and new voices and new canvases to become something more than the last poets of a useless generation.

Being Greek, I would love to see it becoming a church again, but considering how vanishingly small the Christian community of the Constantinople Patriarchate has become, and how the Turkish authorities seem dead set on dislodging it completely, that would be rather pointless.
But don't turn it into a mosque again plzkthx.

What? But then the Muslims will be more offended than the Christians! You Islamophobe! If you're going to do that, you should bring in some crucifixes and turn them upside down to make it fair.

Well, for someone to "give something back" to someone, the other would have had to actually of had it at some point. Greece never had this building, so it's impossible to "give it back" to them.

What about a brothel that sells bacon on sundays?

This sentence has the massive potential to make me look a fool if catholics can eat meat on sunday and I'm imagining the whole thing.

Yes, we can eat meat on Sundays. It's Friday we can't, and since that's the Islamic holy day you'd still be making it even worse for the Muslims. You could have seafood options (non-Halal, of course) on every day except Friday.
