First Republican Debate Tonight

Postby Serrland » Thu May 05, 2011 2:01 pm

Well, it's only kind of an election season debate. It's early in the year, and many big names will not be taking place, but there will be five "contenders" participating in the debate in South Carolina tonight. Questions are expected to be on a broad range of matters, and this type of debate can be a useful tool for generating visibility for lesser-known candidates with loft aspirations. It is indeed hosted by FOX News, but the host isn't as relevant in a Republican debate - there's no need to feign impartiality.

The candidates who will be participating are: Tim Pawlenty (Former Gov. of Minnesota), Rick Santorum (Former Sen. from Pennsylvania), Herman Cain, Ron Paul (Rep. from Texas), and Gary Johnson (former Gov. of New Mexico). As I said before, some big names are missing, but Pawlenty is expected by some to at least be somewhat relevant in the Republican primaries, and Ron Paul is a favorite of many here at NSG.

Will any of you be watching tonight? If so, is there anything in particular you will be looking for?

Why can't the US act normal? This is ridiculous.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

We have a genetic predisposition against it. Stronger in some parts of the country than in others, mind you...

I'm looking for Herman Cain to scream out "I RAN A GODFATHER'S PIZZA!" in what I presume to be a prototypical black fashion.
Also, I am waiting for Ron Paul to stick his foot in his mouth, possibly on the topic of aircraft contrails...
Other than that? Meh...

It's not even memorial day 2011 yet. The elections aren't until Nov. 2012. I haven't even had my beach holiday yet.

Utterly, utterly ludicrous. It's getting sillier than the massively expanded xmas shopping season.

No! You mentioned it! Now the Christmas Carols will start in September! Thanks a lot.

I yearn for the day when our campaigns get cut down to the length of UK campaigns. Sadly, that day may never come.

I'm glad you brought that up. They are hardly debates either for that matter. Oooh I can't wait until Chris Matthews tells me who 'won'!!!!!

I don't watch the debates, they rarely say anything and everything I want to know I can find online, makes them kinda pointless for me. What I hate is those damn mudslinging ads on TV...I HATE seeing them 3 and 4 times every show! Make it all debates for 3 months and ban TV ads then shut up about it. (Not you, the polyticks)

I think 1-2 months would be enough.

If it was too short we be saying President John McCain right now as he was leading in all polls for a brief period. Don't want to take that risk some asshat could get a quick spike in support and sneak in.

I really doubt it. The only thing in contention in 2008 was the democratic primary. Bush had pissed off way too many republicans who align with the party on economic issues.

Just imagine Ron Paul saying gold standard x1,000,000. (Though maybe he will talk about the 'chem-trails).

Do what I do - live in an area that is not at all contested! Sure, you have to deal with rampant corruption and such, but it's worth it. It's a waste of money to broadcast campaign ads here.

Santorum? Really?

I thought his political career was dead.

I will watch.

And I will laugh.

Also, I want Santorum to win the nomination. Because when people google "Santorum" to dig up info, they will be met with a nasty surprise.
