Wouldn't placing a tariff on their goods collapse your economy as well, though?

Would it?

You and China are pretty much interdepedent, to the best of my knowledge.

Given, they'd be more fucked up than you, but you'd be fucked nevertheless.

Not really. Japan is China's biggest trading partner, not us. A tariff would just increase prices over here and give a helping hand to local businesses. As long as tariffs stay reasonable and don't just rise and rise as industries become less and less efficient, they won't revert us back to 19th century levels of waste from punitive tariffs.

Yeah, but you're pretty large as well.

And, to the best of my knowledge;

China ---> Japan ---> USA

China trades with Japan, and Japan produces in China. Japan then sells products in the USA.

Also, tariffs would be entirely useless since all China'd have to do is open a factory in the US that gets all of its goods from China. Like Japanese multinationals and US multinationals, basically.

The Chinese won't see it as worth the effort. Currently all the work is done by US Multinationals building factories in China with Government approval, abusing their workers and relying on the Government to destroy any sense of workers' rights, and shipping the products over here to be sold cheap. All a tariff would do is place an extra fee on every container marked by Chinese Customs.

Indeed. Sometimes I wonder if they qualify for destroyer pricing...

Anyway, yeah, it is beginning to get expensive to produce in China, despite the currency manipulation, hence all of their investment into south east Asia and Africa.

Which is irrelevant, since Obama is either alive or has been dead since August 2008.

Well, he gave that victory speech in November of 2008, and then I'm pretty sure that was him at the inauguration. And then yesterday there was that speech on the economy...unless, of course, this was all the work of an impersonator like that dude Johnson debated on Stossel's show...

Wait, no one has died since August of 2008? That's both remarkable and creepy.

Yes.

With the exception of Osama Bin Laden.

Edit -

I read it along the lines of "dead or alive, as of 2008." :p

As big of a victory it was that we finally got him after 10 years. It really didn't do anything to deter Al-Qaeda. They just got a new leader and resumed their attacks and plots to destroy the west and the "infidels". It really won't be over until a cease fire is enacted and negotiations occur where we would have the possibility of reaching an agreement of peace. So really don't see the huge victory here. That won't be until we have defeated them period.

President Bush tried and failed
President Obama tried and did it.
