While I whole-heartedly believe they are a vile, hate-breeding, viscious congregation of conservative nutjobs hell-bent on simply using hate to promote their beliefs, I also believe they have the unquestioned right to speak their minds as they see fit. The First Amendment to the Constitution protects these people from imprisonment for execising their rights. Believe me, as a gay man myself, and as much as I completely and totally disagree with Phelps and the WBC, I would not, under any circumstance, advocate for their Constitutional rights to be violated; even as they themselves seek to ruin my own personal rights. As much right as they have to preach hate, I have the same right to speak up against them, in a public forum, to defend my lifestyle and those who agree. By imprisoning them for their speech, I would leave myself susceptible to my own First Amendment rights being violated. Ironically, in order to protect my own rights, I must advocate protecting the rights of people who I completely and totally disagree with for in the same manner in which you restrict and segregate, such restriction and segregation shall be rendered on yourself.
