When did birthdays cease to matter?

Postby Dyst0pia » Sat Apr 30, 2011 12:19 pm

Okay, I turned 24 today. My plans? I'm going to do laundry and fix my upstairs crapper. Why? I just don't care anymore. I survived another trip around the sun, I'm another year closer to death, and I'm another year beyond my physical prime. My question for you guys: How old are you? Do birthdays still matter to you? If so, why? What do you do for your birthday?

Eh, my family and I go to the Olive Garden on my birthday, and I still get presents, just not as much when I was a kid. Does your family send you presents?

My 24th was unmemorable. I'll be 25 in about three months. I stopped enjoying them when I noticed the ravages of time begin to set in. So yeah, around my 24th.

Most of my family's either poor, dead, or doesn't care.

15. Will be 16. Yes. I receive presents, invite one friend over either on the day or a week later, invite nearby family members over, go on NS.

16. I hardly notice it anymore. Kind of funny, seeing as my birthday's next week, and I'm either going to be busy with Cappies, or going to someone else's party.

And yet my parents and brother keep whining that I don't care, and they -need- to get me a present. Ugh. Why can't they be happy I'm saving them money?

I stopped caring on my 12th... I'm 16 now and I tend to feel really ill on my birthday. I had swine flu on my 15th. I didn't EARN the day, so where's the satisfaction? In addition, I am a twin so birthdays are just pointless. Though I still buy presents for others because they care about their birthdays.

When you turn 16 and its all:
"You're too old for toys."
"You're too old for that action man."
"You're too old for that really cool looking castle with men and siege weapons."

Meh. While presents were nice, I didn't so much care for them as I never really ever got anything cool. My family's more the socks and underwear type of family. It's bad, though, when you stop seeing even those...
Anyhow, to me, I guess each birthday was a step toward manhood. Now that I'm a man with a nine to five and a house to maintain, I'm seeing it as a step further from the childhood that I miss.

I suppose I'll be excited for my 16th and 18th birthday.

16, why? It gives me some more power and independence.

18, why? Because I finally become an adult. 8)

Very well.

No birthday really matters. What matters is how we treat each other every day. There's nothing more pathetic than the whiny refrain "but it's my birthday!" So the hell what? That makes you special? No, it doesn't. We treat people well on special occasions and neglect them the other 360 days of the year? Fuck that. A good time for a gift or a night out is when you have the money and when the event presents itself. "Think of it as an early birthday present"? Fuck you.
