First Health Thread?

Postby Holy Paradise » Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:04 pm

Swine Flu = Fail Flu?

Great news! According to an ABC News medical expert, scientists who have examined the virus' genetic structure have found that the little bugger is missing a key amino acid that would make it more deadly. Additionally, they are finding that the virus has many similarities to the flu virus from the pandemic of 1956, which means that many people have some immunity built up.

Of course, if it mutates again, that's a different story, but right now, scientists are saying the virus is not as dangerous as they had feared.

This is media alarmism at its worst. It's important to report, yes, but it's not the end of the world. The number of confirmed cases aren't nearly as large as the numbers they're throwing out -- they're depending on possible cases.

The big one or not, the U.S. government should have locked down the border and suspended travel between U.S. and Mexico. That would have been the smart thing to do. The border should be shut to begin with...but meh...

This is eventually going to lead to a universal health care debate. The Obama Administration is going to politicize it (more than it already has).

It's what happens when Scolo gets bored at work and is tired of everyone running around screaming that the world is ending. That and it's drawn on the back of an interdepartmental memorandum notesheet that's probably about as old as I am.

I'll admit I was a bit worried about it, especially when I fell ill a few days ago (Great f-ing timing to have a nasty cold.), I am not at all alarmed about it now.

Although the CDC has predicted more deaths in the U.S., I doubt there will be many more.

Well, probably no more than usual when it comes to seasonal flu deaths. Even if the [seasonal + pig plague] flu death toll doubles, it'll be statistically negligible in terms of population or demographics. The biggest impact will be the political push towards better disease control and the economic impact of lost time and disease prevention strategies.

Regular flu kills around 1/4 to 1/2 a million people each year anyway, so a grand total of deaths that's not even in four figures yet doesn't seem the most frightening thing in the world to me at the moment.

But I do keep my eye out for any pigs that are about to sneeze near me ;)

What is irksome is the ignorance surrounding how the flu is actually spread. As if eating pork will result in one getting swine flu. If you undercook it, or eat raw port, then yes, you will get food poisoning. If you cooked it properly, there is no need to worry.

That's sweet of you, but my day job has to do with airplanes, and airplanes are cool. Every job gets boring once in a while.

Unless you're Jack Bauer, at which point your job is never boring. This is because Jack Bauer never does paperwork. He subcontracts paperwork-doing by threatening other people at gunpoint to do his paperwork.

I wish I was Jack Bauer. Then I could torture someone else into writing, copying and mailing all the letters and forms I have to fill out in connection with all the screwed-up shit I could torture yet more people for until they fix it.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and topic: Swine flu = meh. Just another reason for me to throw a stapler at anyone who tries to come near me.

Coronavirus is worse than swine flu. Plus it’s actually ongoing so we should focus on it right now.

Yeah but it wasn't ongoing eleven years ago when this thread was made.
