It would be extremely difficult for a US breakdown to happen. We have a great deal of unity in culture, government stability, multiple levels of government each with the ability to more or less run on it's own, etc.

Pretty much this. Even if every single government official were mysteriously wiped out, one of the first things a group of self-respecting Americans would do would be to elect new ones. The conflicts would center on who was the legitimate successor to the US. Only in small, isolated areas would you see anarchy and those would be places with very small populations.

It would take a fuck of a lot more than one EMP blast to knock out all the satellites in orbit. Perhaps you think that all US-based satellites just hang around the same place? You know they move and spread all over, right? Any one EMP that knocked out all satellites would also completely disable any prone electronics across the entire Earth... in which case the loss of satellites would be a pretty small deal.

Edit: Also, I think there are more efficient ways to generate an EMP than using a nuclear device. The blast radius would not be sufficient either, considering that satellites move - pinpoint accuracy (against a relatively small, very fast moving object.)

I'm planning on writing a story based on a world after a sort of apocalyptic system breakdown of the government, turning the United States into anarchy. I wanted to find a way to extrapolate from the current state of the world in order to achieve this condition, using economic and political forces as well as current issues (but especially economic).

So, I would like your opinions. How do you think a breakdown of our current system would happen?

I would assume a massive influx of immigrants. A rise of racism in America and the emergence of a Nazi like party which would take enough power to tip the balance but not rule. Basically a race war. Then to top it off inflation would hit an all time high, the economy collapses mid-war. Even if the government survived there is no way in hell it could enforce law and order in the midst of war and a depression.

If a Emp were to detonate and completely collapse America's crutch (technology) today, I would give the US three days before mass rioting at Wall Marts/Super Saves across the country brings the country to a stand still.
