How Would a System Breakdown Happen?

Alright: First we elect a guy who makes history by his mere electoral victory. Second he would have ran his campaign on hope and change, getting everybody excited and optimistic but unfortunately turns out to be like every other politician. Third, he says he'll fix the economy but instead focuses on something stupid, like health care, and rather than delivering the promise of never supporting a mandate, he supports a mandate. Fourth, we re-elect him.

I'm planning on writing a story based on a world after a sort of apocalyptic system breakdown of the government, turning the United States into anarchy. I wanted to find a way to extrapolate from the current state of the world in order to achieve this condition, using economic and political forces as well as current issues (but especially economic).

So, I would like your opinions. How do you think a breakdown of our current system would happen?

Tea Party gets enough nutcases to overthrow the government...

Growing gap between the rich and the poor leads to poor people getting angrier and angrier until rioting breaks out because people can't afford food, gas, etc. This would take longer than the Tea Party thing. Either way you have to set the story a decade or three in the future to make it believable.

That said, if you need help with this kind of back-story, it is not a good sign. You probably should think it over yourself and practice writing some things (even if they don't come out that good) to develop your ideas. That way the story is really YOURS.

I'm just trying to get ideas right now to mesh together. I honestly have little idea as to how the economy works, though I'm trying to figure it out. I'd rather keep it as accurate as possible, so I won't have people pointing fingers going "that could never happen, you are an idiot who throws hollywood bullcrap on socio political issues, and your story is going to be likewise."

So yeah, I'm still going to make it my own, but I want to make sure I have accuracy on my side so people won't be too upset to read the bloody story.

Edit: Also, the main part of the story is more about the characters reactions to what's going on around them rather than what's going on around them itself.
