I don't think so. I can see how people who are sensitive to racism issues would interpret it as such, and considering the comparison of black people to monkeys often made by racist people, I am inclined to say it is in bad taste.

However, if our goal is true equality, then Obama can sit side-by-side with every other president who has been compared to a monkey regardless of his skin color.

Well, I know that when I make an assumption it's usually wrong. Obviously my obvious attempt at levity was not so obvious. Or it just failed. I might try suggesting that Bush simply made it trendy, but perhaps I should assume that you have already made too many assumptions upon my character to smile at anything I have to say. Or I could assume that my typical sense humor has been doused by non-relevant factors, and I should stop trying for the day.

i) There is racism aimed at Obama. Whether or not the substance of this thread is an example of that is neither here nor there. Obama has, I feel, been criticized to an extent greater than the average President (if such a thing could be quantified) relative to his policies and person. It's easy to confuse this especial criticism with racism, given that it's a feature unique to him.

ii) He's not a failure. He's not what was expected by many, but as centre to moderate right-wing politician's go (which is approximately what he is, although he takes a centre-left stance on some issues, perhaps), he's fine.

I would agree, but I feel it has less to do with race and more because people, during elections, saw him as some sort of savior. Now that they are waking up to the fact that he is a normal human like everyone else, who has their faults and needs time to do things, they've become impatient brats. An then of course you also have political enemies and yada yada...

Race is most certainly a part of it, but I feel it is a minor issue in the grande scheme of things. It mostly has to do with American's fickle nature and impatience.

Having lived during Carter, Reagan, Bush (1), Clinton, and Bush (2), I'd say that the President's current criticism level is probably less than those I've named that were Presidents before him. IMHO, I believe his race has been a point of hesitation working against many who would be critical of him.
