Civilian firearms in USA, should they be banned?

Postby Howestonia » Mon Apr 18, 2011 9:52 am

So, I'm from the UK, the USA's very different older brother, civilian firearms are prohibited here exept for hunters, farmers and sportsmen. Obviously the Police and army have them too... Now obviously we have less shootings per year here than you do, because we are s lot smaller, but if you multiply that figure by however many less people than we have, we still have a lower rate of shootings, thus, if you scrapped civilian firearms, so only the Police and army have them, you would have much less crime... Do you agree?

No. But regulations to prevent mentally disturbed or otherwise incompetent people from owning them would help.

As would a national firearms database being available to the police.

No. Everyone should have at least 3 guns.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

For being a traitor to guns.

There are two sacred rights in the US:

1. The right to own powerful firearms in a variety of sizes types.

2. The right to troll people.

But that was a law meant for old times, like here it's still technically legal under ancient law to shoot a Welshman with a longbow inside the gates of Nottingham... You'd still be arrested for it though, otherwise I'm never going to Nottingham!

Changing cultures is really difficult - taking away guns in the US would cause more problems, allowing them in the UK would also cause more problems. If you outlawed them in the US people would just hide them, in the UK allowing them would lead to a massive surge in gun crime and gun related deaths.

It would help to solve many things...

But the hell that the majority of their population would unleash, the fierce resistance from Republicans (and probably a few Democrats, too) and the sheer stress for the politicans and the leaders...

You could get working on an amendment to the Constitution.

But, meh. If the Americans want to keep America with high crime rates, then let them. I don't care either way.

Fellow Britfag reporting, OP.

I'm of the opinion that everyone who owns a gun should have to go through a very rigorous training programme to ensure they are not only proficient in using it against a paper target, but that they are also able to use it in a situation that requires using force to put copper and lead slugs into a person's torso for whatever reason.
I imagine that for every 10 people who own a weapon, 4 or 5 would be too terrified to use one in a situation that required it.

Basically, everyone who owns a weapon should be as or more proficient than a police officer. Otherwise, you're just playing to the 'small man syndrome' and/or redneck with gun stereotypes.
