I thought Cuba was a paradise, but apparently it isn't and that's America's fault.

The obscene abortion rate would lower the infant mortality rate, and furthermore...

Screw it. Just look at this.

Cuba is a rotten corrupt hellhole dressed up as resort, frankly I'm hoping it doesn't last another 5. I should think any socialist, capitalist or decent human being should be rightly ashamed of any person to call Cuba a success story.

I'm going to enjoy when Glasnost comes to Cuba and the state stops doctoring it's records to impress the free world. They did it in Russia, they do it in China, and sure as hell their doing it in Cuba too.

Cuba hasn't improved one step since Batista, if anything they've gotten worse.

That. It's the main thing holding Cuba's economy back. Plus I like their cigars.

Some facts from Wikipedia:
Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate,[14][15] an infant death rate lower than some developed countries,[16] and an average life expectancy of 77.64.[14] In 2006, Cuba was the only nation in the world which met the WWF's definition of sustainable development; having an ecological footprint of less than 1.8 hectares per capita and a Human Development Index of over 0.8 for 2007.[17]

It's funny that one thing I like about Cuba is as a result of the embargo; I like the old cars. In some ways, it shows the power of industry. They have kept cars from the 50's on the road & in use today! It kind of makes me think of how, in America, we buy a car & sell it or trade it in ever 5 or 6 years. Do we really need to produce so many vehices? I think they show us that we can do a much better job at conserving the resources used in regards to industry.

I guess that kinda goes with their WWF sustainable economy rating.

Although I'm no expert on Cuba, I thought in honor of it's 50th birthday as a communist state, I would like to ask, what do you think about Cuba's accomplishments under Fidel Castro's rule?

Cuba can be proud of the fact that it has a 99.8% literacy rate, a low infant mortality rate (lower than most developed nations), & medical care (as a poor nation) that is one of the better examples in the world. Cuba is also the only country in the world to meet the WWF's definition of sustainable development.

Also, what changes do you think his brother & new president Raul Castro will bring forth?

Or if you have other thoughts on this momentous anniversary?

I'll add a poll just for fun :)

It's infant mortality rate is tainted by one of the highest abortion rates in the world. Medical care is of very poor quality. Even basic medicine is not available at times.

Happy birthday, Cuba. I don't support socialism, but the 26th of July Movement was much better than Batista. I alos believe the embargo ought to be lifted, other nations allied with the U.S. trade with Cuba. With that, Raul Castro-Fidel's little brother, and current president; veteran of Cuban Revolution- has stated that he wants the embargo to end and respects America.

Actually, Cuba under Batista was no more wealthy than they are now.

Just like the current "socialist" system, the wealth was concentrated among the corrupt elite.

- According to the FAO, 842 million people suffer from chronic malnutrition. None of them is Cuban.

- In the "Free World", 200 million children live and sleep on the streets, none of them is Cuban.

I should also note that the CIA cited a "census" for that literacy rate. If it's one of Castro's, I'd expect some fudging of the numbers.
