the 14th amendment directly states that you are both a citizen of your state of residence, and The united states

They wouldn't be leaving the united states, and they wouldn't need to apply for any special status. The only difference now is who gets the taxes and who's gets to make and enforce laws

Like I said Arizona would be forcefully re-taken. If Arizona could even officially secede before the movement was put to an end.

The terrain, in most areas, is actually fairly mountainous and rocky. More oppurtunities than anywhere on the Plains.
