I've never witnessed a single LARP event (and I've watched several dozen) that has completely gone by the book. Mostly, the people who want to go by the book stick in very small like-minded groups and play against like-minded people. The vast majority of people play it like it's a big battle with fake weapons.

My bf have showed me the hammer he used when he played (well, it's a hammer on a long pole). Though they played capture the flag or something with weapons basically.

A lot of LARP is capture the flag. Like I said, barely any of it that I've witnessed actually adheres to live action D&D rules.

It's a lot of fun and happens to be very physically taxing.

My cousin used to LARP when he was a teenager. He made his own leather clothing and padded armor, as well as his own weapons.

He was also a 6'3" 15-year-old, so he was bigger than just about everyone else. Watching him smack the shit out of everyone was great.
