When you were a Theist.

Postby The Truth and Light » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:46 pm

Many Atheists have been in this mental state at some point in their lives. There are some who were Atheists from the get go, but this is not always the case. Most of us believe in God at some point or another.

My question is, if and when you were a Theist, what was your reasoning for holding that belief? What was it that made you believe? Did you want to believe?

To be completely honest, I don't think I ever had reasoning for being a Theist. My mother approved of my readiness to worship, and my father approved of my Bible studies. It just always seemed a good thing to do in that regard. This was before I realized that I didn't have to believe something to please my parents.

It was the only foreseeable method to clearing myself of my despair of being oneself.

I wanted believe in the Christian God. I however cannot accept a God who creates human beings, and then punishes them for his own creation. A God like that is unacceptable in my opinion.

Last I checked Darwin was fairly devout in his religious beliefs.

My reason for being a Christian, anyway, was simply because I knew nothing else. I didn't think about it much. I neglect to say "theist" because the definition of "god" is so loose, I can't necessarily say I'm not theistic. For sure, though, I don't believe in a bearded man in the sky, or anything of the sort. More along the lines of East Asian religions and philosophies.

I was born an atheist. When I asked my parents about religion or God, they told me that they didn't believe but that I could make my own choice. Safe to say, I chose the way I was born. Granted, I never believed in the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus, either.

Actually, most Christian churches believe in Theistic Evolution.

I'm not sure about Santa Claus. Last Christmas we didn't go to bed until one, and when we woke up there was a plasma TV in the living room.

Which is a big fucking deal in my family.

I held that belief because I was raised to hold that belief. But, after some time they way the pastors attempt to scare you into continuing that belief gets to you, and after awhile fear was the only thing keeping me in it.

A desire to rid myself of that fear was what prompted my abandoning that mindset. I've since become a braver, more intelligent person for it, in my opinion.

yes, but a majority of the US (I live in NJ) is very Christian or similar so I was receiving a lot of pressure from them as well as muslims and mormons etc.

I was a theist because I honestly knew nothing else. Now I'm an agnostic deist, and I still accept the belief of a God, just not a Christian God.

I don't think I was ever a theist. Even when I was old enough to understand what religion was I could differentiate story from life. I'm an apathetic agnostic and happy with it.
