I spent a week in Montreal, a couple of days in Ottawa, a few days in Toronto and a night in Niagara Falls. It was cool. I'd like to see Vancouver sometime though. I think this was in 1997.

Rummel is a political hack, and his statistics have about the same credibility as a holocaust denier's. Even Conquest revised his figures downwards after the Cold War, in light of actual evidence rather than keeping the same outright stupid propaganda. The god damn statistics of births and population change in the Soviet Union cannot be be squared with Rummel's figures.

Well, as an Orthodox Christian, I do admit that I have an axe to grind. Although it is not dishonest intentionally. I have never seen numbers to support you claim. Not once. We celebrate the martyrdom of a great many saints every day at the monastery nearby. I would assume that my Church would have the correct numbers. The dozens of survivors that I know have spoken of the horrors of Soviet persecution. So if they are misinformed, then perhaps you can point me to the correct information? That way I can let my priest know that the hundreds of millions of Orthodox who pray for the intercessions of these saints are incorrect in their assumptions surrounding the Soviets.

Further, some context is necessary about the repression of the Orthodox Church in Russia (which was never consistent). For example, the in the early period, the Orthodox church was suppressed because they supported the Tsarists, and actively worked towards a restoration of the monarchy and reactionary class rule. They weren't being singled out, they were given the same treatment any organization that did the same got. In fact, repression of the Orthodox Church decreased during the Stalinist period (more than made up for by his other crimes).

Stalin had been in seminary, and he still seemed to have respect for men of the cloth (Call it one of his personal idiosyncrasies, like Hitler's love of animals). Religious affiliation may have been actively discouraged in the Soviet Union, but the repression the Orthodox Church faced was because of it's reactionary role in society. But, during the Second World War, this was relaxed, even though other members of the party felt this was eminently un-Marxist.

I'm not entirely sure if this thread really had to be created. If you want to become a socialist, just look it up a fair bit on wikipedia and gain a better understanding of it. It's as big a thing as you want to make it, but as an early post stated, it really is such a loosely defined thing that it's almost like saying you want to get a job. If you make a thread like this, it's as if you're intentionally seeking arguments or some sort of floodgate that can be opened. It's a personal thing too, and I think the only person that really has any answers for you is yourself.
