The fact it's old is not an excuse however. It's like demolishing the entire Ephesus city and saying: "It was destroyed anywyaay!"

In fact, it could be destroyed by anyone in Iraq anyway. Al-Quaida, US Marines, Shia, Sunnite, Turkmen, Kurd Militia...

There isn't much more they can do... that doesn't make what they did ok though and that doesn't mean they shouldn't have done things better.
