What were your political ideals as a child?

Postby Socklund » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:24 pm

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

What did you think about politics as a young child, as best as you can remember? How have your views changed since, or have they changed at all?

I was alternately an anarcho-communist with primitivist leanings, or a far-leftist. My views have changed remarkably little, though I can now state my case more elaborately than "People shouldn't go hungry!"

'Do as I say or get bitten and have the heads of your toys mysteriously disappear.'

Taking politics as a matter of who gets what, when and how, this broadly translates into 'I get everything, all the time, through being a total shit'.

I remember during the falklands 'war' thinking that Britain should not relent until the entirety of Argentina was conquered and made a subject race and nation of the British Empire. Otherwise I really didn't see much point in it - the Falklands being quite tiny and crap.

I am still somewhat of that opinion.

Also I though the government should ban schools.

The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

I didn't start thinking of politics until I was a teenager and mostly that was regurgitating certain Conservative Points of my Father and Liberal Points of my Mother. Then I said I won't be a part of your system and threw it on the GROUND! Thus becoming a Stalinist in my latter teenage years.

Since "child" usually means "pre-teen or younger to me", I'd say the closest approximation would be a staunch Nintendoist-Dinosaurist :P

I didn't say it was my introduction to politics, I said it was my eye-opener. I was so concieted, for over ten years, that hardcore Republican conservatives were what's best for the country, gettin' all those damn Muslims and Mexicans out, and deporting the poor, and whatnot, anti-abortion, anti-legalization. NS simply made me realize how stupid I was.

Early childhood: staunch Republican (and didn't know it), repeating what my parents told me.

Early High School: terrifyingly authoritarian right winger nut job, with a few flashes of Catholic guilt.

Late High School: moderately conservative, Catholic guilt now subdued into socially-aware agnosticism.

College: Libertarian, flirting with Objectivism.

Post-College: Jovial Political Apathy that swerves rapidly and without warning into Righteous psychotic rage over the imperfections of the human condition and the failure of reality to live up to the systems and theories I was taught. Diet Libertarian, all the flavor, half the crazy. (Best way to describe it: Idealistically Libertarian, Practically Moderate.)

I thought as a child, that the government should be run like it was in the Empire in Star Wars, just a bit more friendly towards people.

I never really cared about politics until 9/11. After that, my support of Bush's initiatives got me interested in conservatism in general, and that was certainly a great influence in turning me into the conservative I am today.

When I was too young to understand political ideology, I thought the Nazis were cool. When I first started to understand politics instead of just looking at all the pretty swastikas and snazzy uniforms, I admired Bill Clinton and thought civil rights were very important.
The Serene and Glorious Reich of Nazi Flower Power has existed for longer than Nazi Germany! Thank you to all the brave men and women of the Allied forces who made this possible!
