Go to the library. They have books, magazines, computers, all sorts of stuff. My local library has a coffee stand - you can buy snacks, coffee, tea, cocoa - even bottled water. All the way to the back of the library, they have a comfortable lounge area with wonderful views of the Rocky Mountains. If the library isn't an option, go for a hike, go to a park, volunteer at an animal shelter, talk to friends, learn to knit. There's a lot to do that requires little or no money, and might actually serve to help someone else.

Have a look at your local bus/coach (or even train - it's worth comparing prices) and see what's the cheapest way of getting out of the city and into the serrounding countryside. The Pennines are awesome and well worth it for walking. Take a tent and an OS map (if you have access to these) and you can make a week-end of it, otherwise a day trip is always good and great exercise.

Hopefully you planned ahead for rough times.

It is time to dig into your emergency survival pantry. Canned foods, water, matches, a months worth of your favorite alcohol, your favorite legal high, papers, bongs, and a map or hiking guide and a local bus system schedule. A bicycle can be nice.

The whole idea is to get high (like F***d up) and get out there and really see the world that you dont see when you are in your prison job!

If you dont get high, just go anyway. Our jobs are not life and neither is having money. Get out in the breeze and smell the stench of humanity not entrapped.

You can work out.

Or you can get yourself invited to house parties, rock up late and that way you can drink for free as you "borrow" a drink from everyone.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

Hmm, thats a good idea, when I head up to Edinburgh I might take a little time to stop off at interesting places on the way. I didn't know Newcastle had anything interesting (not to sound offensive, I just didn't know anything about Newcastle), so that can be added to my list :)

The library certainly is an option, I'm there fairly often already. Learn to knit - thats an interesting one. Theres a lot of charity shops round here that sell cheap wool, thats something I can do for very little money. Thanks!

I have several outdoorsy-type friends, I'm sure I could borrow a tent and anything else I needed for camping. I'll have to look into ticket prices.

I approve of this.

And with all the rain recently, it's right in my back yard!
