We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

7.62 is not for snipers period. It is for DM rifles, to engage targets too far away for a M4 and too close for a dedicated sniper. Snipers should only use dedicated high velocity high BC rounds like .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, .300 Lapua, .408 Chey Tac, and .416 Barret. Really hitting a target from even half a mile away with a 7.62 NATO rifle is a small feat, hitting a target from almost a mile is nearly impossible.

Of course, a few people have gotten kills from that distance with .50 cal weapons, and the longest sniper kill is with a .338 lapua.

the furthest gun kills came in dogfights if you want to be technical about because the average spacing between planes when they open up on each other with the machine guns is bout 4.2 miles apart

The Barrett M82 and the Denel NTW-20 would beg to disagree.

I believe the correct term is "Anti-Materiel Rifle" but they can still be used as sniper weapons

Ah, crap, sorry, I misread what you said. Nonetheless, they can and, in the case of the Barrett, have been used intentionally against human targets.

No, they are used to kill people at long ranges. A .338 Lapua won't do much to an armoured humvee, let alone anything big, and a 7.62 NATO can't hit anything out to a mile, even a kilometer is pushing it.

.338 is a sniper caliber while .50 is anti-material (light anti material I think?).

Technically speaking .50 was developed for machine guns, but it is a good sniper rifle round due to its high muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient.

Indeed so.

Material is simply the constituent stuff, but materiel is the aggregate stuff used for business or military undertakings/operations, as distinct from personnel.

Again, this is indeed so. There's a reason it's the .50 Browning Machine Gun and not the .50 Browning Anti-Materiel. And I may be mistaken, but to my knowledge the .50 BMG was used for long range sniping before being used in an AMR. (Carlos Hathcock's use of the M2 is perhaps most famous, but the M2 was being used for long range sniping as far back as the Korean War.) And I may be forgetting something obscure here, but there is a marked absence of these types of rifles between the WWII era AT rifles and the AMRs from the 1980s onwards. But the ATRs really weren't suitable for long range usage.

The .338 Lapua Magnum currently holds the long range kill record, and two spots on the top 5 list (the others all being .50 BMG). You have to get down to 7th place to find a 7.62x51mm NATO, and the range was well under 1000 m short of the .338 Lapua Magnum's longest kill shot.

you preferred the M60???? I heard that weapon was, frankly, a POS while the M249 was pretty decent.

You heard wrong. Maybe at this point the SAW has out grown its teething problems, but I doubt it. The M60 is(was) a proven, reliable weapon. The SAW because of its light barrel has/had serious issues with its barrel due to its lightweight design.
