Everyone should move on with him being a little wiser.

I understand the reason for the body slam, but I think it sets a bad precedent to not punish kids for harming classmates.

Why punish him though? I mean in the real world, people don't get punished for self defense, so why punish kids for self defense in the schools?

Like I said, sets a bad precedent, could lead other kids to think that violence is okay.
Also, I don't think kids this young are exactly the same as adults, nor should they be.

School is meant to train you to be a domesticated monkey, nothing more. Thoughts of self-defence could lead to thinking you can challenge things and stand up for yourself. Schools are meant to teach you that you're unable to affect any change and to do what you're told.

There's actually some truth in that. School System in the USA are more concern about students being able to pass a standardized test and to rattle off memorized facts than to think critically and to question things.

However, if you go down the Zero Tolerance path, all you're doing is telling the victim that it's wrong to stand up for yourself and to just let the little shit have his way with you. Zero Tolerance Policies have not shown a decrease in school bullying and school violence. It's a stupid policy that should be eliminated. What SHOULD be done instead is that the bully should be suspended and have a parent teacher conference and I'd enroll the kid who acted in self defense some Martial Arts class and teach him to only use martial arts in self defense.
Also, how are you suppose to prepare them to be an adult and to live in the real world if you baby them all the time?

I don't advocate zero-tolerance, or babying kids for their entire life.
