How far are you willing to ban independent thought? The Nazis had science because they essentially gave a special exception to a certain group of people, allowing them to get away with free inquiry but not letting anyone else question anything. Also, those that participated in science were still not allowed to question the government, and we see all throughout history how not being able to question the government is not a good thing.

I think that in order to determine the rationality of a ban one must first logically analyze it before implementing or rejecting it. To assume it is correct is faulty logic, but the same goes to the assuming that it is incorrect. It's correctness must simply be considered unknown before a logical analysis.

Because marriage is a legal contract. It's not discrimination to say, "People who enter into X contract will receive X terms, while people who do not enter into X contract will not receive X terms." What is discrimination is when you say that black people, or female people, or gay people, or Jewish people, or whoever else, are not allowed to enter into X contract due to the fact that they're black/female/gay/Jewish/whatever.

Very well. But with what right does the government (warning: hyperbole ahead) force people into marriage? If you promise to spend your entire life with the same person, you get advantages? Who does the government think it is, forcing me into what it apparently considers to be the optimal way to live your life?

What if I just don't meet anyone who I like enough to get married to? I will then be punished for that. Great. I don't think that's what the government is for.
