Stephen Hawking overated or genius?

Postby Risna » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:34 pm

I am sure you all know about this guy. Is he really a genius of Einstein or Newton level? Or is he just batshit crazy and does not deserve our recognition because he never came up with anything significant to improve science? I personally do not like him because he tends to be a bit full of himself. I do not know his work very well so i can not judge him properly. How do you guys feel?

He's a genius.

Please do not discredit scientists if you are not in their field. Saying "because he never came up with anything significant to improve science" is utterly stupid. Every scientific contribution is good. Each is a sum of all its parts.

Both. He is indeed a genius, however all geniuses are wrong from time to time, and automatically deferring to anything they say as fact is indeed overrating them.

I personally feel no sympathy for him as a cripple. He obviously is really freakin smart, smarter then i will ever be. I have normal bodily functions he has a stronger brain then me. I see it as a trade off. Some say not to pick on a cripple but does anyone remember reading the book "The Davinchi Code"?
The cripple turned out to be a conspirator and because the guards underestimated him they got screwed.

In retrospect i do agree with all your points on how he or any scientists ideas help move knowledge even if they are later disproved. To discredit him for that was very selfish of me.
