Well it really depends on where you are in the world...Lets say we are talking USA, it is almost like a mini-world; only Americanized. You have New England, where the programs do very well and you have the west coast where the programs do well depending on the poverty level in your region (poor people are angry people). Than you have the south where the programs are not so awesome...I blame the evancrazies. Then the middle of the country is sort of a hit or miss, its like your in NE, the west coast and the south at the same time!

I don't know. It seems better to face discrimination head on than avoid it.

For me, anyways. I let people know I'm gay at the first oppurtunity.

Welcome to the UK, enjoy your free healthcare, you'll need it in almost any private place.

It's considered kinda creepy to go up to your boss and say 'hi, I'm X and I'm as homo as a rainbow' :p

Oh, no doubt. Always better to face it and fight it head on. Just saying the fight is harder in certain areas.

So it may seem scary...Fear is no reason not to fight something. Besides I will be damned if we let those right-wing religous fundamentalists win at anything. Resisitance and fear go hand-in-hand; hiding in the shadows might keep you from facing a fear but it will never solve the problem. How can we expect the world to change if we are not willing to fight for that change?

Religious based, but still makes exactly the same point here.
Get beaten with own art model at school in front of class.
Teacher watches
Block all hits, fair enough, he was in blind RAEG!!1!!!! mode
Get held back.
Guess who else is? This guy and his friends.
30 minutes getting bollocked by these guys for being a devil worshipper
No punishment
Enjoy ridicule and verbal assault over next month or so.

Two years later one of his friends said he "didn't care" and "did it for fun"

I feel for you, but there are so many things you could have done. You could have made this guy go to jail if you had enough witnesses.

I have had my share of problems when I was in the military. However, when faced with discrimanation the men and women who I had trained and fought with would always be at my side in defence of me and who I was. Not to say I asked for my battles to be fought for me, or never fought my own. You may lose a battle here and there, as I did, but the war is not over and wont be untill we win it. Thats my view.

The Victor
Poet: C.W. Longenecker
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t
If you like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

A bit sappy, I know. But I feel has great meaning to the gay cause.

30+

enough?

Also, someone tried to strangle me against a wall three times, in front of what was at least 200 people. Twat of a year head wouldn't do anything about it.

I did, however just ignore him being physical, stared him in the eyes and tried not to laugh. about 6 teachers saw, too.

We even chased it up with this head of year, he still did nothing.

With that attitude, perhaps the poem is not as false as it seems to you. You may not have had the best experiences so far in life, and that is a shame. It is your choice, however, whether to fight on or not.

Until you learn to deal with situations where failure, no matter how optimistic you may be, is a certainty in the end, I can't take your random motivational 'fight for your right' speeches seriously.

I know that. I was confused that Buffy didn't know you could say "represent" in English.

In the sense that Iuuvic used it. I've only heard "representando" and commented on how I didn't know you could say it in English too.

Call the police. Quit talking to the teachers who watch without stopping it, don't sort it out with the student, call the authorities. Assault and battery can get people put in jail.

Not to get all monkish on you but sometimes a victory feels like a loss and vice-verca.

Not to say being optimistic will assure anything, and of-course picking your battles is important. Yes, I understand sometimes you do not have a choice whether there will be a battle or not, in which case remember something important....It is only school. School is not a mini version of the world you will live in, its more like condensed hell (for some). I understand you are in the UK, but I am sure there are civil right orginizations in your country as well as in mine. You can start documenting the staffs unwillingness to help you and send the information to such an agency. You say you cannot arrest a school, but you can sue just about anything.
