Some reporting from CNN.

Also, apparently the quake was initially called a 7.9, but later upgraded to 8.8.

It wasn't very near to Tokyo, so that report I read earlier might've been about another city.

And while it's not exactly the time to be laughing, I did have to smile a bit at 'han-shoe.'

CNN is even calling it an 8.9 now...

I think it's right near Sendai - I know a lot of people in that city and a lot of people in the two prefectures most likely to be affected. Does anyone have access to any source of information that shows/is telling specific damage to specific cities/neighborhoods? I don't have access to a television right now.

An 8.8? That's worse than Haiti!

The difference is that Japan is a first world nation with great health services and infrastructure.
Their one of the few nations which could react properly to getting hit by a natural disaster.

I wish that was the case, but the Great Henshin Earthquake showed that when something hits here, it can be very, very bad.

Er, oh yeah, I'm ok. Had some fun moments with the school rumbling around, but thankfully Nagano is far, far away and literally in the middle of Japan so no worries.

That said, NHK is currently showing pictures of sea-going trucks and the tsunami was 4m+ in some areas.

So far, no reports of casulties.

It looks like the Boxing Day Tsunami in Indonesia. Just sweeping through farmland. I hope they've evacuated everyone in time.

If Pat Robertson claims this was because of Japan making a pact with the devil in exchange for Nintendo or something...

I can't say more otherwise I'll encourage illegal activity.

I probably should, but i was reading up on the Haiti earthquake and comparing it, and I rediscovered his statement which pissed off my already bad mood.

Best wishes for minimal loss of life, and a quick recovery from the quake.

In the anime Macross, the Japanese always seemed to rebuild their war-ravaged cities almost overnight. I wish them the same success!

You can see latest quakes at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html.
Gives some basic information on maps and quakes that continuously happen, along with the depth.

Basically just watching farmland a few hundred yards inland maybe in Sendai. They just flashed images of a building on fire, but it was not specified. They are on the phone with some American expat rite now, so the reporting is limited...

Sendai airport is completely underwater, they just said. Basically, Northern coastal cities are getting hit hard.

NHK's website is going up and down like a yoyo right now, but last report said parts of Sendai (Sorry, I don't know which) had some fires. I don't know how bad though or where.
