Can you explain that idiom? I know what it means, but I don't know why it means what it does.

For example, if you said, "Prepare to meet your maker," and I said, "I don't know what that means," I don't want you to say, "It means to die," I want you to say, "It means to die because when you go to heaven, you meet God, i.e. your maker."

It implies that the person should put their foot in their mouth in order to prevent themselves from making futher stupid/offensive comments.

In the course of a conversation, this person asked what the Ghost Dance was. "Essentially," someone else in the discussion answered, "It was a giant quasi-religious magical ritual aimed at bringing the buffalo back and making the wasi'chu (derogatory term for 'white man' - literally, 'greedy ones') disappear."

At this point, my mark - an Irish-American Wiccan, BTW (and a descendant of Buffalo Bill, ironically enough), wisecracked smugly: "Doesn't look like their magical ritual worked all that well, did it?"

In my best wistful, contemplative style, I mused, "You know, magic like that - a ritual that big - might take many years to come to fulfillment. Maybe even a century..."

The Wiccan mark's eyes went wide and she blanched. "And these rituals were..."

"Oh, a little more than a century ago," I said quietly.

Have you heard of the 'silent majority'? That's how most Christians (like me) behave: By keeping our damn mouths shut and simply being good people. Many people have subverted Christianity into a horrible cult-like anger machine, which is to be expected of any mainstream religion. Simply don't give the crazies credence (or gun licenses) and the problem is solved.

I don't hate any person, or group of people for that matter, but what I don't approve of is the religion itself. There is a distinct difference; my mother, for instance, is a practicing Protestant, and I love and respect her very much. What I do not love is her belief system in regards to religion.

I apologize if you were offended by my statements, which admittedly were partially driven by anger from watching that horrendous video-blog, but I will not back down with my disapproval of religion.
