LOL - there have been some aftershocks in the area in the last hour or so, but all in the 3-4 range.

I doubt the nuclear reactor will do too much. The Japanese need to have redundant power systems, but I suppose with a disaster on this scale, it isn't really feasible. It might not even help that much with power probably gone. (I don't watch the news, it tends to be talking about everything BUT what's actually happing at the disaster - at best, it'll be stuck talking about what happened at the start)

It's not that much radiation, from what I've heard, and I doubt that the Japanese will let things spiral out of control. They've been through worse, right Mr. Truman?

Amusing story:
Reporting from Tokyo --
She was elderly and alone, injured and in pain. When the massive earthquake struck, a heavy bookshelf toppled onto Hiroko Yamashita, pinning her down and shattering her ankle.

When paramedics finally reached her, agonizing hours later, Yamashita did what she said any "normal" person would do, her son-in-law recounted later: She apologized to them for the inconvenience, and asked if there weren't others they should be attending to first.

The worst earthquake in Japan's recorded history left a trail of blazing buildings, inundated coastal communities, wrecked roadways and potentially unstable nuclear power plants. But it barely made a dent in the implacably Japanese trait of exhibiting concern for others even in the worst of circumstances.

Koreans are the biggest minority group in Japan, mostly the "Zainichi Koreans" from the occupation period, but also immigrants from the 80s. The two main Zainichi organizations (ROK and DPRK affiliated, of course) run schools that use Korean as the language of instruction, and the girls uniforms are usually the same as for Korea. Most of the attacks were in the 90s, and in '99 most schools allowed girls to wear a different skirt to school and then change.

BTW, Osaka, where I lived 15 of my 19 years in Japan, has the biggest Korean population.

My heart goes out to Japan. I'm really considering donating, damn being poor, but I want to send at least something, maybe I'll do that thing through Red Cross where they add it to your phone bill. Something, anything at least for one of my top favorite countries in the world.

Anyway, living in SoDak, I'm starting to wonder if this isn't going to cause Yellowstone to destabilize more. I hope not, if Yellowstone goes I'll most likely have little to no time to get out of here. I live about 500 miles away from it, so maybe, but I doubt I'd make it very far before the pyroclastic floes and everything got here.

I know California will be affected by this, hell all along the ring of fire will be probably, but Yellowstone is a big worry of mine--again just due to proximity.

living that far away from a volcano, even a super volcano, you probably wouldn't have to worry much about pyroclastic flows which travel at about 450 mph. You got an hour to run. Even if it did reach you by that time much of the heat will have dissipated and you would choke on hot gasses slowly, rather than burn instantly. Assuming you escape InstaDeath from the flow, the ash would spread across much of North America, depending on meteorological conditions and you may find yourself choking on hot ash, or being bludgeoned by falling rock. That is of course assuming that the gasses were vented from the ground before the eruption, or else there will probably be a Verne Shot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verneshot) and then we're all pretty much fucked anyway.

That's what I did (texted to donate). Main reason being is that these text charges won't be due until the end of April.

I really doubt this will affect Yellowstone.

Maybe not immeadiately, iunno, I guess we'll have to see. Still Yellowstone is going to blow and this just made me think more about it.

Pretty much decided I'm going to donate, at least $10, not much but its something.

good start. I havnt donated any money to disasters lately. Instead I have donated 2nd hand furniture and my time to help clean up. When the disaster is overseas the physical hand is so much harder to deliver. Anyway after all of the latest disasters I kind of have charity fatigue outside my normal community activities.

The bad part wasn't the tremors, its the nuclear powerstations. The Japanese currently have two options, their industry potentially throwing the world into a true depression, or evacuate Japan, the better part of South Korea, the Kamchatka Peninsula, potentially even Vladivostok, and Beijing. A true meltdown would spell displacement of millions.
