My personal view is that Japan is going to be gutted after this. They are frankly not going to recover any time soon. The radiation emitting from the power plants are going to destroy the surrounding environments, and with a high population density, if it hits a major city, we will be seeing casualties in a six figure hight. The world cannot do much about it... it's nature's way.

radiation is not a "kill everyone it touches" type danger and i think they will (have?) evacute the area but you do have a point

Personally, I don't think so. Japan has a rather long history of being able to rebuild from worse, even far worse nuclear disasters.

They are already starting to clean up.

Well, depending on who you listen to, a theoretical nuclear meltdown at those plants could either have only local effects, or could wipe out everything between the Urals and Hawaii. There's probably a happy medium there, but yeah...I think that, in the long term, Japan will be fine.

The Japanese are a pretty tough bunch when the situation gets tough. Even if Japan gets totally wrecked, they'll rebuild. I mean, really, they managed to modernize from scratch in the 19th century.

Also, finally some insight into the cause of the cooling failure. It seems the switching system for the backup generators was in a basement that was flooded by the tsunami. Also the generators were swamped when the tsunami came over the seawall protecting them, and that they were in a low lying area.

But also some worries:
US helos are detecting radiation 60 miles away.
The people in charge are having to release steam at regular intervals which will probably be getting dirtier and dirtier.
It's not clear if the reactors venting are the mixed oxide reactors, which use plutonium, meaning that what's being released could be worse than previously thought.
Aopparently the coolant gauges are not giving accurate readings.
The seawater is being pumped in using firefighting pumps.
There are concerns that the spent fuel has been or may be exposed.

You know how the first Reactor one blast is believed to be caused by hydrogen build up? Well they used to have a special gizmo to undo the reaction that created the hydrogen safely minus the blast. But they figured they didn't need them so pretty much every plant on the planet ditched theirs. Whoever built them id gonna make a killing putting them back in.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but 2,000 bodies were just found on the coast of Miyagi prefecture.

I'm hoping Reuters i just publishing rumors that aren't true, but that would be out of character for them.

I am not seeing where the revenge for Pearl Harbor is coming in.

Divine punishment? Seems like a poem than a statement of they had it coming.

Ok I found a couple references. Reads like dumbass trolls. I am sure there are some who believe it. I had an in-law who probably would have said it. However, he was in the war and saw the Japanese up close and personal. Stories he told were rather ugly so I can understand his hatred......

Just saw a blip that Nagano had a 6.0 and it said it was too far away for it to be an aftershock.

People here started cheering when they heard of the earthquake and tsunamis. It was horrible. Sometimes I wish it hit them instead, racist bastards.

But of course there's nothing I can do to stop them from being racist. And I think the one in Nagano was 6.6. But I'm not sure.

JMA doesn't seem to have a 6.0 or 6.6 listed in the last 45 minutes or so, and they're very good about getting things up fast.
