Indeed. And they needed the reminder - it's been too long since the Hanshin quake.

It's been a while, but I've done my share of winter camping, including a wek in a tent at scout camp when the canoe pond froze over solid enough to walk on. (Normal for some places, but damned cold for South East Texas!)

Also, someone just pointed out that today is the anniversary of the great Tokyo Fire Bombing air raid that killed over 100 k.

Didn't notice if this had been posted but here's a before and after in the area affected by the giant wave. http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/japan-quake-2011/beforeafter.htm a wall of water moving at 40mph don't leave much behind.
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

Back in '86 there was a flood that knocked out gas and water to most of Carson City where I was living. It it hadn't been for our stove, we literally would not have been able to heat the house, cook beyond microwave dishes, or take baths.

Thus is why I inisted on having one, I remember that, and another time the furnace for the house went boing for two weeks in the middle of February. This just kind of added icing for the cake.

Yup. I will say though, it seems as if the lessons of Hanshin were learned. Japan has handled the quake better than it did then.

Of course, as my wife notes, the DPJ is also damned well aware that its very political life hangs on this. If Kan doesn't come off looking like a leader, if the DPJ doesn't function as a government giving the people help and direction, they will never see power again, and they know it.

That said, Kan sounds like he is finding his voice and is sounding like he's finally in command.

Worse, much, much worse.

The last time it hit was the Great Kanto Quake, which killed 140,000 (The deadlist quake on record) and leveled Tokyo. Tokyo is much larger than it was then, and while newer buildings have better quake codes, older ones post WWII that were tossed up as quickly as possible to rebuild after the firebombings do not, and there's a lot of them, and a lot of houses like that.

Not to mention as we saw in this quake, once the trainlines go down, there is virtually no way to evacuate the city. When it hits (Because it's a matter of when, not if), the latest estimations I saw call for almost a quarter of a million dead.

Just as I'm regaining some normalcy, I read this. Not good. Goose bumps started crawling all over my skin once I got to the quarter million part. :(

Recent news states that areas are starting to see electricity again and the various social networks are working wonders in terms of getting information out.

The smaller costal areas though... A lot of them are still isolated and even the military (Both the JSDF and US) are having problems getting to them.
