tl;dr version: this is a translation of a report from the Yomiuri, a major Japanese newspaper, saying that in a town of 23,000 only 5,900 made it to shelter, and that the city council was swept away by the tsunami while in the middle of a meeting about what safety measures to take.

Jesus, I visited Otsuchi this fall. We saw a mountain with markers about how high historic tsunamis have reached; we were talking about how terrible that was, but how good it was there are now enough safety measures that it couldn't happen again, to the same extent.

Still haven't heard from family friends in Ishinomaki. We're hopeful their house is okay, but if they were almost anywhere else off of the hill that they live on, it sounds bad.

That is not the case for unfortunate Haiti.

We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?
