Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Federal workers don't have collective bargaining rights, why do state workers? Besides, we're BROKE--people don't like not having massive pensions? Oh well.

Yeah, it's not like the unions said that they would accept higher payments into those systems, or a number of other consessions...

Oh wait, they DID. Sorry.

I don't see how this possibly violates open meeting laws. The Democrats that fled have missed how many days of work now? If you skipped that many days of work would you still have a job? Should politicians be any different?

Even a grade school understanding of the situation would allow you to know that the union had already granted all the financial concessions, and that the opposition was to the requirement that the union sign away their rights to negotiate later. You seem to be lacking that understanding.

A worrying amount of people seem to be lacking that understanding.

The GOP of 2011 is doing as the Dems of 2009 did, over reaching. I'm not too sure why, but apparently both parties seem to be missing the idea that the bulk of the voters don't like them so much as they wanted to punish the other party.

Hardly. They're reining in the unions and we've needed that for quite some time.

The open meeting law does not provide for voiding of the law as a penalty, It only provides for a 25-300 dollar fine. At least as far as I can tell.

The penalty will not be the voiding of laws, but the fact that it makes a nice sign to hang around your opponet's neck.

After all, noting that "Not only did Sen Whoever voted to strip rights away from (Insert group here), he did so while violating state law. Do you really want to return a lawbreaker to the state senate?" makes a good argument that is hard to squirm around.

Possibly, though given its a misdemeanor the GOP will likely equate it to a traffic ticket they got while taking care doing what is right. That's of course provided the Dems even remember where their balls are come election time.

The Dems didn't really overreach, they have a bad marketing team, and public opinion turned on them. The Republicans, while having more bad ideas, are better at politics.

I am a strong supporter of unions, including public sector unions, so I think this vote is disgraceful. Nonetheless, I have no procedural problem with it. A majority is a majority: the party that controls both houses of the legislature and the governorship should be able to implement their policy agenda. The voters can throw them out, and get the terrible things they pass repealed, during and after the next election.
