I listen to just about anything except (C)rap and Country.

Pretty much everything but hip hop and the likes. (There are a few exceptions like paperboys) I started listening to the soundtrack of the film Le Destine Fabuleux d'Amelie Poulain. (Amelie) It's pretty brilliant.

I used to go to a Jazz club in Sheffield.

In theory, I like Jazz. I like the intent. I like the concept.

Unfortunately, in practise, I find it almost un-listenable, 99 times out of 100.

There's no need to add an "other" option. We all know that everyone can be subdivided into listeners of metal, rap, jazz and country.

Four humours. Metal, due to its choleric undertones, is yellow bile. Rap, sanguine and youngest of the four, is blood. Country, melancholic and nostalgic, is black bile. That leaves jazz as phlegm, well suiting the indolence of its more extended timeframe.

Four elements. Metal listeners, with their unmistakable passion they carry throughout arguments on webforums, are fire. Jazz listeners, with the air of smooth sophistication they would like you to think they possess, are water. Country listeners, taking comfort and strength from the folk influences of their favoured bands, are earth. That leaves rap listeners as air, and indeed the genre would be a flight of fancy to one who lived fifty years before its time.

Four cardinal directions. Metal comes from the far North, cold and icebound. Country, from the rolling rural hinterland of America, is South. Rap, bubbling up from countless sources, is of the variegated West. Jazz comes from the East -- and why? Did not the black slaves from whose music it descends come to America from the east as well?

When these four musics are united into a single whole, the universe shall wink out of existence, its goal complete. The ideal music shall have been achieved -- a perfect square -- but four also signifies death.

Therefore, for the love of God, leave out the "other" option. The four genres must stand alone, all others expressed only as a product of them.

Although it's a shame you didn't include Scelsi.
