I'ma kick my shoes back in tolerant Australia nao and wait for insanity in the US to blow over.

Someone should tell them that Allah and the Jewish/Christian God are basically (nay, literally) the same God.

Too much faith in the American public. In fact, most cannot separate the terrorists and extremists from the rest of the Muslim world and think they are all one and the same.

I thought sweeping generalizations were bad. And it's not true. Most Americans I meet (inside the states or abroad) think I'm Muslim. They treat me no different from anyone else.

It's a vocal minority of bigots that are making all the fuss. It's the same thing that happens in the Muslim world.

What freaks me out is that the two defining "terrorist events" of my childhood were both due to Christian extremists, yet already it seems like everyone has completely forgotten about them.

(Oklahoma City bombing, and Waco shoot-out)

Those were isolated incidents and they don't represent Christianity as a whole. Everyone knows that each and every Islamic crime is part of a global conspiracy.

I blame Al-Qaeda and the other extremists. They creates negative images towards Islam with their terrorism campaign, which is actually against the Islam itself.

Umm Fuck yes it is. I don't care if they did build it there or not. It is still spitting on the graves of the poor souls that died that day. It is like a big middle finger to America saying "HA WE KILLED YOUR PEOPLE" get your head out of the damn gutter....granted they didn't build it, they shouldn't have even thought of building it near there, or most likely even in the same city.

The USS Cole was also part of the terrorist attacks that defined my era...It was done by Muslim Extremists in the year 2000

Look at this from Wikipedia
"United States, February 24, 1997: Ali Abu Kamal opens fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State Building in New York City, killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claims this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine". His widow claimed he became suicidal after losing $300,000 in a business venture. In a 2007 interview with the New York Daily News his daughter said her mother's story was a cover crafted by the Palestinian Authority and that her father wanted to punish the United States for its support of Israel.[1]"

I'm surprised so many people believe Islamophobia is on the rise. I think people in general are less reserved and more likely to speak openly then they were a few years ago (and this is true in general, not just with regards to "hate speech,") but I'm pretty sure Islamophobia peaked when it was "logical" (notice the quotation marks) for it to do so, 9-11-2001 and shortly after.

In what POSSIBLE way could you perceive that? It's not even a mosque, it's a cultural center...in the middle of a predominately Muslim district of New York! They used to call the place Little Syria. Islam didn't bomb the twin towers, just like it isn't shooting missles into Tel Aviv or Eilat. It was dangerous extremists who give the religion a bad name, just like how racist Christians give Christianity a bad name.

What I think are funny are the Christians who hate Jews...Hello, your Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was...A JEW! Christianity is branch of Judaism that believes Christ is the Messiah. So in fact, all Christians are JEWS! :p

Fuck no, I agree with Havenic Israel. Because although the bomber is muslims, there's nothing to do with Islam and/or other muslims. The muslim terrorists are just extremists after all. Many things they do like killing innocent civilians and suicide bombing are actually against Islam, because they have not studied Islam completely.

And you get to decide what "America" believes?

Because I'm American, and I found the OPPOSITION to that community center to be the most offensive and disgusting middle finger by far. What my country means to me is equality of opportunity, freedom, and fairness before the law...and the people who tried to deny equal status to Muslims were spitting on all of that. In my eyes, THEY were the ones who spit on the graves of the 9/11 victims.

Don't you think you're exaggerating? I'm sure they didn't realise that it wasn't a mosque when they opposed it. That said, it was a disgusting gesture that I'm glad hasn't been made in my country (yet).

Who the fuck cares if it WAS a mosque? It would have been an equally disgusting, racist, ignorant reaction to oppose it. People like that are the shame of this country.

I like to think they're misinformed. What worries me are the parallels between what's happening to Muslims right now and what used to happen to Jews in the past...

I wouldn't say Islamophobia is on the rise. Then again, I live in a pretty liberal area. But, really, those protesters ought to be ashamed of themselves. Picketing a rally to raise money for the homeless, due to the religion of those organizing it? That's disgusting. If they really have a problem with Islam, hate is the wrong way to go about changing things. Not to mention it makes them (and the rest of America :palm: ) look like idiots.

Oh, I think the image of Americans are idiots has long been established. Long before this. Ah, stereotyping. So funny yet so wrong.

Perhaps you should improve the education system a bit (not that there's anything wrong with it, of course) and we'll see if that stereotype changes a bit?

Sauropolis wrote:Islamophobia: is it on the rise in the US? Is it becoming government sanctioned in all but name?

Recently hate mongers picketed an ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) event that was organized for the purpose of raising money for the homeless.
The picketers shouted hate speech, insulted Islam, directly accused the Muslims present of being women abusers and pedophiles, and made other slanderous speech. Of course were the situation reversed and American Muslims doing this to Christians, the authorities would have become involved.

Scarily enough, congressmembers of the Republican party were present showing support and declaring God blesses the picketers for their work.

Perhaps even more disturbingly, a number of GOP elected officials spoke at the rally. Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA) said to the raucous and hateful crowd, “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of what you’re doing.” Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) said that the multiculturalism “has paralyzed too many of our citizens to make the critical judgement we need to make to prosper as a society.” Most horrifying of all, Republican Villa Park Councilwoman Deborah Pauly, who spoke alongside the congressmen, said that the fundraiser represented “pure, unadulterated evil.” She continued, “I don’t even care if you think I’m crazy anymore. I have a beautiful daughter, I have a beautiful 19 year old son who is a United States marines. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few marines who will be willing to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise,” referring to the attendees of the fundraiser:

PAULY: Let me tell you, what’s going on over there right now? Make no bones about it. That is pure, unadulterated evil. I don’t even care, I don’t even care if you think I’m crazy anymore. Because I have, I have a beautiful daughter. I have a wonderful 19 year old son who is a United States Marine. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few marines who will be willing to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise.

As if this were the 1940s, the picketers shouted at American Muslims to "go home" and that America was "one nation under God, not Allah".

What does NSG think of this growing hate in America?

...Who cares?

When we start putting Muslims in ghettos and stripping them of their rights, it will be an issue.
