Islamophobia in America: "One nation under God, not Allah"

Postby Sauropolis » Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:47 am

Islamophobia: is it on the rise in the US? Is it becoming government sanctioned in all but name?

Recently hate mongers picketed an ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) event that was organized for the purpose of raising money for the homeless.
The picketers shouted hate speech, insulted Islam, directly accused the Muslims present of being women abusers and pedophiles, and made other slanderous speech. Of course were the situation reversed and American Muslims doing this to Christians, the authorities would have become involved.

Scarily enough, congressmembers of the Republican party were present showing support and declaring God blesses the picketers for their work.

Perhaps even more disturbingly, a number of GOP elected officials spoke at the rally. Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA) said to the raucous and hateful crowd, “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of what you’re doing.” Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) said that the multiculturalism “has paralyzed too many of our citizens to make the critical judgement we need to make to prosper as a society.” Most horrifying of all, Republican Villa Park Councilwoman Deborah Pauly, who spoke alongside the congressmen, said that the fundraiser represented “pure, unadulterated evil.” She continued, “I don’t even care if you think I’m crazy anymore. I have a beautiful daughter, I have a beautiful 19 year old son who is a United States marines. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few marines who will be willing to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise,” referring to the attendees of the fundraiser:

PAULY: Let me tell you, what’s going on over there right now? Make no bones about it. That is pure, unadulterated evil. I don’t even care, I don’t even care if you think I’m crazy anymore. Because I have, I have a beautiful daughter. I have a wonderful 19 year old son who is a United States Marine. As a matter of fact, I know quite a few marines who will be willing to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise.

As if this were the 1940s, the picketers shouted at American Muslims to "go home" and that America was "one nation under God, not Allah".

Hate speech is like totally cool braw. No need to get the law involved over some words.

Ironic as God=Allah.
It's only a separation of language.

Whilst in practice Islam is more similar to Judaism, they recognise the prophet Yeshua. So I don;t see why the 'Christians' hate them.

I remember having the beginnings of Islamophobia when I was in my mid-teens, but then something happened that nipped it in the bud: I met an actual Muslim from the Middle East. There was an Egyptian foreign exchange student in one of my high-school classes, and getting to know him as an actual person killed my fear. He actually ended up being one of my two best friends that year. That experience has led me to think that the best way to end this fear in America is to increase socialization, preferably at an early age before the prejudice can calcify into immovability, so that more people can see what I saw: that they are just regular people who think the minority who are terrorists are misguided nutjobs.

At least, in my experience at least.

The lineage of the Abrahamic religions dictates that all the "Gods" are one, as you said, Y-hw-h = Jehovah = Allah. The difference in opinion is predominantly around Yesua, the Heretic/Messiah/Prophet. As it stands, a Christian cannot say that it is one nation under God, not Allah without contradicting themselves. This amuses me.

So yes, althought I am agreeing with you, I am adding my (first year) Theology knowledge into the pot. for recognition of the facts, Innsmothe, good to see it!

I'll be honest, I don't like Islam, but I dislike Christianity to.
I have nothing against the individual worshippers, be they muslim, jewish or christian.
Just keep it out of our schools and I'm happy.

I have no problem with those who worship the Islamic faith, it's just those who portray Islam as a Radical Religion (and the media sensationalizes it of course), Its just sad to see intolerance running amok in a country claimed to be a melting pot of cultures :/

Hate mongerers have absolutely no logical reason to hate Muslims. That's why they're hate mongerers.

I disagree.

If there's the slightest bit of difference, people can, and will exploit that difference. Look at the Shiite and Sunni muslims.

I think one finds more anti-Islamic sentiment among the journalists and the politicians who hope to make hay from denouncing it than one will find in fact. The only examples of it I ever see are on the telly, and I live in the Deep South, where prejudice runs rampant like bitter vetch...

*Some* Islamic people make it very hard for Christians to like them. There is going to be a certain amount of mistrust of course, after the last near-decade of the media, everyday virtually harping on about the threat of terrorism.

But its a hard fact that you can't ignore, lets be honest, a minority of Muslims blew up the tube station, smashed into the WTCs, cut peoples heads off etc etc etc.

So equally, the question posed could be turned on its heads and read "Why do 'Muslims' hate Christians?"

Or a crackdown on antisocial behaviour would be more in order. Just because you herald from a different religion, doesn't give you the right to start persecuting others.

Which is why I'm not concerned about Islamic radicalism in America; we do a pretty damned good job of corrupting people and have for a long, long time.

This is not to say that there won't be a few radical Muslims in America who pose a threat to law and order; after all, there are radical Christians in America who pose a threat to law and order, too (I'm looking at you white supremacists "Christians" out in Idaho; yeah, you...)

The solution to that problem is to infiltrate the Hell out of domestic militant Muslim organizations, like the FBI has done to other radical organizations in the past. At the point where every third radical Muslim in America is an FBI informant, such groups will be so thoroughly neutered that they won't be able to set off a firecracker in a trash can without the Feds knowing about it weeks in advance.
