MLK did not support violent tactics, so don't riot in his name. He sympathized with their grievances.

Of course. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear.

LiberNovusAmericae wrote:I also don't mind disagreeing with Dr. King on economics.

I'm not as concerned with you openly disagreeing with his economics as I am with some right-wingers outright erasing them altogether and pretending that he was somehow a champion of right-wing economics and respectability politics.

Actually the peasantry kinda did own their own fields (depending on location it was in common with the rest of their village ofc), minus the crops they had to give to barons or whoever was above them on the hierarchy (and that was mostly, IIRC, to make sure the larger settlements had an adequate supply of food).

I chuckle a little whenever I see centrists praising MLK when, back in the day, they would be one of his among his vocal critics.

What is considered moderate changes over time. I doubt that everyone's a racist in this day and age except for hard-left wingers.

The serf's had benefits, at least.

In 1234 if vikings appeared in your hamlet you can be sure your local lord would do his best to protect his laborers. In 2348 if scavengers appear at your shelter, your warlord probably paid them to take your shit.

1234's a bit too ahead for the Viking age, and most of the time those boys were raiding chapels because they were full of gold because, ironically, that's where clergymen (or barons; I forget which, exactly) hid their gold early in the Feudal era in the event of a peasant revolt.

*sigh*

The conditions for a serf's contract with their lord was generally that they had to labor for x amount of days - usually 3 - per week on their lord's fields. The other 3 days of the week were 'allowed' to the serf to labor in their own fields, often common fields rather than individually owned ones, and forage, chop wood, etc, for their own needs. Which they would then be taxed on. How generous!

Could I get some sources on that? I'm genuinely curious on this one because this time period in history's pretty interesting to me, NGL.

By the way we gotta remember not to talk about feudalism as though it's a product of a by-gone age. There are literally still feudal lords out here in the Philippines to this day, many of them are even congressmen and senators. Our previous president had one of the country's largest haciendas, and was paid handsomely when the Supreme Court ordered it to be redistributed (a painstakingly slow process, mind).

Hell, we still get a feudalism of sorts in some rural areas of Argentina, courtesy of our agricultural oligarchy. One of our most hilariously awful congressmen is one of them, in fact.
