Do high ranking US military officials wield their swords in combat? I think not. The idea behind a ceremonial guard is that they are there to let the civilian public know there is a military presence, and not to proceed past point X. The Swiss guard not on public duty get proper equipment. Although, I'm not sure they stock rocket launchers, or anti-tank devices. However, the Italian government probably wouldn't take too kindly to having US armoured divisions heading through their country to get to VC.

Who would win a war between the the US and the worlds smallest sovereign state? On the one hand you have an incomparably powerful conventional military force, on the other you have the Swiss Guard and a billion pissed off Catholics - including many Americans. In my opinion the VC would win since the worldwide economic sanctions that would fall on the US would cause its economy to collapse and it would have to sue for peace.

The Pope would send in his special black-robed-ops priest into the US through a southern border and "back-door" the US while the US President would be on another world apology tour bending over to world leaders to prove he is one of them and then the POTUS would sue the VC for peace in the UN courts blaming Israel for the whole thing and get alot of money to finance his health care.

It does however have 1 billion soldiers already living all over the world, on key positions in societies.

US does have the Supreme Navel force, Airforce, and Ground forces not to mention Navy Seals which are the most well trained unit in the world.

It's not like we'd have to fly across hundreds of miles of Italian territory, you know.
