Do you ever visit the Ukraine? I was in Kiev fairly recently, which I quite enjoyed. I've never been to the south around Odessa though. Every Ukrainian person I met had a good cheer to them.

All of these Soviet Republics had the same features: a ruling communist party, terrible infrastructure, ethnic peoples, and a lot more. But they were all different in some way. So what is the best Soviet republic?

In my opinion, I think it is Russia, because it was the largest, both in size and people. Also, it dominated the soviets in culture, economy, and technology.

Kazakh because they were the shortest soviet republic(shortest for lifespan as being a Soviet republic)

You would have come closest in the period 1918-1924, when the modern Central Asian republics were mostly divided between the Turkestan ASSR and the Kirgiz ASSR, with two smaller 'People's Socialist Republics' around Bukhara and Khiva, so the map looked like this:

Image

However, these were ASSRs of the main Russian Republic, not full Soviet Republics; that came later.

Just to confuse matters, the Kirgiz ASSR is essentially the territory of modern Kazakhstan, not modern Kyrgyzstan. It took the Soviets until the 1930s to decide that the 'Kirghiz-Kazaks' should be called Kazakhs, and the Kara-Kirghiz should be called 'Kyrgyz'; which helps to show the extent to which the modern nation states in that region are not just artificial constructs in terms of their state boundaries, but also in terms of the formulation of their ethnic identities. Though since everyone more or less accepts the Soviet-era ethnic designations and boundaries (to the extent that they cause occasional inter-ethnic flare-ups in the Fergana Valley), there's no real harm done. Not currently, anyway.

We have no particular reason to visit Ukraine; Mrs Arch's family members still in the former Soviet Union are all in St Petersburg.

I have been through Kiev very briefly a couple of times, though; I have no objection to visiting Ukraine - it's not a political thing.

Have you had Lviv chocolate? I bought lots of it as gifts, and had to resist eating it.

Ukraine. In terms of industry, it carried out the rest of the Union. Not to mention Sevastopol is possibly the most important warm-water port in the region, and we all know about Russia's struggles with warm water.

You sure? The infrastructure of the likes of the Baltic states and Ukraine wasn't that bad.

It sucked ass 1970s-1990s, Soviet roads were always stereotypically bad with potholes. Some old movies still show it. Mostly due to snow and the climate just thrashing everything.

Kyrgyzstan and most of the Stans are culturally rich and had/still have beautiful natural scenery. Take the prize for being the best.
Georgia's mountain peaks, slopes and beaches were great. Top holiday destination back then.

Sounds like the Democratic Party.

Democratic Party wasn't the ones who attacked DC beacuse they didn't like who won the fair and free election.

Bruh, what? Lenin was as much of an authoritarian and anti-theist as Stalin. Not sure where you got this nonsense from.

He was indeed. But that is because he fell away from the original ideals he subscribed too.

Yes, that is what I meant. He did turn over an election beacuse he lost.

At that point Lenin already fell away from his ideals and that is what turned what could have been a democratic state running on socialism.

Did any of the others produce the first non-hereditary female head of government?

The Tuvan ASSR was strictly speaking not a Soviet Republic.

Lenin never subscribed to any ideals other than the ideals that led to a dictatorship run by Lenin.

I wish people would stop pretending otherwise.

Actually the Baltic republics had already broken out of the Union, gaining de facto independence, during the 1991 double coup d'etat (yep, double: the attempted one led by the conservatives and the other one, successful, led by Elcin).

Anyway, the best Soviet Republic was the Karelo-Finskaja.

I meant legitamate
Also it’s Karelo-Finnish
Also also that’s irrelevant
