People literally are having to leave the city, which is becoming a massive problem. When ordinary people can't afford to live in the place they work in, stuff starts to not work so well.

It will probably make companies leave eventually as well. Geography is what kills Silicon Valley.

Seize their property and you might see a Chinese naval expansion to the point it ends with military invasion or outright aversion to investment. The Chinese don't invest in Venezuela for the very reason that investments are often seized by Maduro.

There's no way to make the risk of fire and landslide go down. Filling in the ocean ended badly in 1906 with liquifaction of the soil in filled in areas of San Francisco Bay. There's no solution to this problem that wouldn't either demolish the environment (which is unpopular amongst Democrats which most Californians are) or result in many deaths when the next earthquake/abnormally heavy rainfall/fire happens.

Oh please. We aren't some puny country like Japan or the UK. The US is a massive country. High-speed rail lines running through it are difficult. It's why cars rather the public transportation are so much more popular here.

It will cost millions if not billions and possibly trillions to even break ground on such a system.

The hyperloop will take years to come to fruition and our transportation needs will have grown too excessive for the hyperloop to be developed then.

It was explained on page 10, post 4 of this thread. The economics of rent control doesn't work, it gives perverse incentives for landowners to act contrary to what that policy tries to accomplish.

Rent control restrains the amount of houses at rent as the margins become insanely worse compared to just selling it, i.e. less supply and a natural shortage on houses available. Good way to solve the problem, I wonder why politicians haven't thought of it!

There are some problems with having rent control as policy. In locations where rent control has been implemented, owners of rent controlled properties tend to not spend money maintaining it, because the cost of upgrades might exceed the amount that can be legally gotten from rent. It often contracts the supply of housing instead of expanding it.

The reason there is a housing shortage is building luxary housing for rich people. If you stopped building it there would not be a shortage. This isn't rocket science.

Here is quite an interesting article I found on how exactly, the price of rent is determined. It is incredibly complex and rent varies so much from location to location, but I think that this is quite useful in informing anyone who decides to read it in full. It certainly has for me. I really learned to some extent.
