Title was a little misleading since its pretty hard to find a Dominionist Catholic let alone a member of American Orthodoxy.

Yes, but it might be that the proposed amendment itself would be unconstitutional.

Only if it deprived a state of its equal suffrage in the senate without the consent of that state. Since 1808, that's been the only possible way for an amendment to be unconstitutional (prior to that, it also couldn't allow congress to ban immigration that the states permitted, or tax such immigration at a rate of more than $10/person, or raise taxes not in proportion to the census).

You cannot challenge a proposed amendment in the courts, because it is not considered a law being passed.

Yumyumsuppertime wrote:Pretty much what it says on the tin. In a poll by Public Policy Polling, and in response to the question "Would you support or oppose establishing Christianity as the national religion?" (Q17), 57% of Republicans interviewed stated that they supported this idea.

This strikes me as troubling. While it's no surprise that the GOP has leaned ever more right over the past few decades, and has pandered particularly to the religious right during that period of time in a mad scramble for votes, I find it disturbing that a majority of people in the party are so openly disdainful of the Constitution. Previously, the rhetoric was at least hidden behind a veil of "We respect everyone's right to believe as they wish". Now it's more of a "If you're not all about Jesus, then you're not really an American".

Thoughts?

57% of Republicans hate the Constitution of the United States of America. Colour me surprised.

Well the margin for error is +/- 5.5%, so it could be up to 62.5%. But hey, at least it isn't 63%.

As someone who has a good portion of friends as Atheists, eh. Does a national religion even mean anything other than 'Take that godless heathens of the world!'. It seems like something we'd try to do during the Cold War or something. Not an issue I think.

In theory a national religion could be of as little consequence as a national bird. In theory it could lead to a permanent Remove Kebab casus belli on all neighbouring heathens and heretics.

Oh god no....

WHY REPUBLICANS. WHHHHYYYYYY.

I already am not fond of America, if they have Christianity as a national religion, then I'm out.

We should exterminate everyone who voted yes in that poll, for the good of mankind's sanity.

Well, not quite.

[nitpicking]
The margin of error (which, if not specified otherwise, is plus or minus one standard deviation from the average) being plus or minus 5.5% on an average of 57% means that there's about a 68% confidence that the actual value falls between 51.5% and 62.5% . Which doesn't rule out the cases of the actual value being 2%, 63% or 99% ... it just says that those values are a lot less likely.
[/nitpicking]

Yep. One of the reasons I dislike this nation (US) is that damned pledge...
