Based on simple responses to not as simple questions? That kind of approach wouldn't even take into account if someone could misunderstand the more vague questions (such as "waste of time to rehabilitate some criminals"; do they mean that some can't be rehabilitated or that you can't rehabilitate them, not even some of them?) let alone would it take into account why people answered the way they did.

So the validity of the question would depend on how much people morally opposed to sex outside of marriage have broadly socially conservative political views.

Even then it's simplistic, since sexual issues are put on the same axis as issues like war. Taking into account "economic permissive vs. social permissive" still doesn't take into account the difference between "authoritarian" in the "warmonger" sense and "authoritarian" views on cultural traditionalism, which aren't necessarily tied. Like with Christopher Hitchens and Pope John Paul, it wouldn't make sense for their disagreement on religion to "cancel out" their disagreement on the Iraq War on the social libertarian/authoritarian axis.

Frankly I don't really buy into ideology labels in the first place. I think more of my opinions could be labelled liberal than for most other ideologies I've heard of, but my views on some subjects might make me sound like a neocon. o.o

Edit: Despite the philosophical break, I think the correlation is pretty strong.

Pretty similar to what I consider myself as. As for the debate on whether people can be grouped together under labels, I believe they can so long as people take into consideration that they are generalisations and being part of one group does not mean you fully support all of their ideas.

He was also a pretty cruddy leader when it came to running a war -- he had no idea about the somewhat radical concepts of 'letting your generals do their job', or of 'not attacking more people than you can beat at once'.

He was an incredible military strategist until syphilis degraded his judgment. Hell, I personally think military service should be compulsory for the office of President or any other like national leader.
