Are yous ready for yet another election candidate controversy?

I think you are

Labour candidate Ian Byrne shared abusive comments about female politicians

A Labour Parliamentary candidate made a number of foul-mouthed social media posts against female politicians, LBC can exclusively reveal.

Ian Byrne, who is running in the safe-seat of Liverpool West Derby, shared a message about Baroness Michelle Mone, the founder of underwear brand Ultimo, which called to “hit the c*** where it hurts.”

The post, shared in 2015 on Facebook, then received comments calling for violence against Baroness Mone, and accused her of betraying her working-class roots.

...

LBC has uncovered a number of other messages from Ian Byrne’s Facebook account, which has since been deleted.

Commenting on a post suggesting Ms McVey was at risk of losing her seat, Byrne called her a “ “b*****d… and soon to be gone”.

...

Hopefully the fact that many young people didn't bother their arses to vote in the Brexit referendum acts as a wakeup call to them.

I hope so, too. Following coverage of the election, it seems that more young people are registering to vote. Whether they follow through or not, is another thing, of course...

... Charming. :eyebrow:

This year, the two leading parliamentary parties really don't have to try so hard to smear their opponents. They're already doing a very good job of trashing themselves in the public eye.

Oh there definitely is, it's already happened in other countries, especially in Canada, now it's the new normal political weapon to discredit political opponents.

What actually happened is that Mr Bull referred to a Jewish councillor as 'Shylock'.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... ck-remarks

Mr Bull is now simultaneously trying to blame Margaret Thatcher for the poor quality of his education meaning that he had no idea that Shylock - the titular character in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, of course - is Jewish, while acknowledging that he did know enough about Shylock to use the term to 'describe a person who relentlessly tries to get what they want'.

Apparently this is 'common usage' with working class families in Ilford; in much the same way that working class families in Blackburn refer to any vacillating young man as 'Hamlet', and retired dockworkers in Glasgow refer to any slightly ridiculous fat drunk as 'Falstaff', no doubt.

This one doesn't seem to have anything to do with social media. While Huskar used a Twitter post as a supporting source, the original source is Mr Bull using 'Shylock' at a meeting of local council cabinet members. The target of the term then made a formal complaint to the Labour Party.

Boris Johnson accidentally made an incredibly compelling argument against his own Brexit deal

Excerpt wrote:UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson made an unusual and very revealing comment Thursday night that inadvertently serves as an incredibly compelling argument against his own Brexit deal.

Speaking at a meeting of local Conservatives in Northern Ireland on Thursday evening, the prime minister said: "Actually, Northern Ireland has got a great deal. You keep free movement, you keep access to the single market, but you also, as it says in the deal, have unfettered access" to Great Britain.

This poses a rather obvious question.

If retaining free movement and staying in the European single market is such a "great deal" for Northern Ireland, then why has Johnson prioritized a Brexit plan that would prevent the rest of the United Kingdom from having that same access and freedom?

"The Single Market and freedom of movement are a great deal - even Boris Johnson recognises this - so why isn't he keeping them for the whole of the UK as part of the many benefits of EU membership?" Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake said Friday morning.

YouGov have released a series of new polls by region for Great Britain (sorry Huskar; no NI).

The one that first caught my eye was for north of the border. Labour are down 15% in Scotland compared to 2017, and are now fourth in Scotland, behind the SNP, Tories, and (just) the LibDems:

https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1192803345423093760

But that's not even close to being Labour's worst decline.

You can see the rest of the polls by scrolling around the above tweet.

Labour are also -25% compared to 2017 in the Northwest of England, -23% in the Northeast, -20% in Yorkshire and Humber, -20% in the West Midlands, -20% in Wales, -19% in the East Midlands, -16% in the East of England, -16% in London, -13% in the Southeast, and -12% in the Southwest.

The only regions where Labour are ahead of the Conservatives are Wales (but by a mere 1%), London, and the Northeast of England. Labour are now behind the LibDems in Scotland, the East of England, the Southeast, and the Southwest.

In fairness, it should also be pointed out that the Conservative party poll rating is also down in every region of Great Britain; but always by less than the Labour share is down, and only in Southeast of England does their decline exceed 10% (at 13%).

The LibDems and the Brexit Party (compared to UKIP in these polls) are the main beneficiaries.

This is, of course, just one set of polls by a single polling company; the usual caveats apply.

But all the same, those are staggeringly poor polls for Labour; they hint at possible Pasokification.

I mean I have resigned myself to the fact that Scotland is going to be almost totally yellow by the end of it, but I hope that Lib Dems can edge them out in my constituency.

Not that this is helping Labour, mind...

A third Labour candidate in one day has been been embroiled in controversy surrounding allegations of antisemitism.

Jewish News reported that Laura McAlpine, the party’s candidate for Harlow, defended her chief campaigner after he wrote about a “Jewish final solution” to the Israel and Palestine conflict.

McAlpine, who is aiming to unseat the Tory MP Robert Halfon, refused to condemn the remarks of Brett Hawksbee, despite a party official having warned that Hawksbee had “breached IHRA (the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism) in almost every single way possible”, the article stated.

Hawksbee blogged in September 2018: “The fear of many on the left is that the ideological successors of the bombers of the King David hotel, the mass murderers who decimated Deir Yassin, would be quite happy to see a pogrom in Gaza and the West Bank, a Jewish final solution to the Palestine problem.”

According to the article, one email circulated to Labour staffers stated that McAlpine “isn’t happy with the first line (of the apology) because she doesn’t want to be disloyal to someone who ‘organises so much for her and who she is on the phone with three times a day’”.

Edit:

And remember, kids, that's three Labour candidates getting embroiled in controversy over anti-Semitism on the very same day that the Jewish Chronicle made this its front page leader.
