You know, let's think about that. "KirK" as a character appeared in 80 Original Series episodes, 22 Animated Series Episodes, and 9 of the 12 movies (first 6 was a TOS cast set of movies, Generations was a crossover, and the last 2 are continuity reboots featuring a non Shatner Kirk)

All total, 108 pieces of media.

Star Trek also is composed of 178 episodes of the Next Generation, 172 episodes of Voyager, 176 Deep Space 9, and 98 Enterprise, along with 3 movies that do not feature Kirk.

627 pieces of media

In fact, of all total, of the 726 episodes and 9 movies of star trek, only a total of 108 of them ACTUALLY feature Kirk.

A total of 85% of the television media produced under "star trek" doesn't feature Kirk at all.

Kirk was also in one episode of DS9. FAKE FAN. YOU'RE RUINING THE FANDOM! STOP BEING SUCH A POSER!

As a High School student I see these people, a lot. "Wearing my Spider-Man book bag! L-O-L, I'm such a nerd!" or,

"Oh, hey! You're reading a comic book!? I love those!"

"Cool. What series are you reading?"

"Oh, I just pick them out in shops."

Supposedly, being a nerd is considered 'mainstream'. But real geek culture goes beyond liking something that is associated with nerds. I should say right now that I don't hate these people, I just want this fad to end.

One of my "favorite" rants I've seen (on another forum) about this phenomenon was about a female gamer who does videos on Youtube of herself playing games - roughly 90% of the screen is the game, and 10% is her on a webcam talking about the game. The honest-to-god argument someone made for how she is a horrible evil attention whore was "in one of her videos, she is wearing a tank top, and you can see a little bit of her cleavage." That was literally it. That was his entire proof that she was an evil, attention-whoring, "fake geek girl" out to torment men. She was playing a video game while not actively hiding the fact that she had breasts. THAT BITCH.

I remember on NSG, one female game critic came up, and a certain group of people were so doggedly insistant that she couldn't ACTUALLY be a real gamer, constantly upping the anti when presented with real evidence that yes, she's a woman, yes, she plays video games, yes, she then talks about them that in the end they were INSISTING that she actually just rented all those video games, posed for the pictures of her in front of stacks of video games, and then just watched youtube videos about the games that she discusses in thorough detail of her reviews.

People were more willing to believe that this woman had constructed an elaborate ruse, fabricated tons of evidence, and elicited people in this grand conspiracy to trick 13 year old boys that there may be women out there who actually play games. This was, to them, more probable than the idea that someone can play videogames and have tits at the same time.

Surely their tits would get in the way of the controller...

Yuuuup. This is why I laugh my ass off at the idiots who will claim that sexy female cosplayers are taunting, victimizing, or "preying on" men by being all sexy and yet unavailable to them. It requires incredibly profound narcissism to believe that someone you find attractive is actively trying to attract YOU and is thus somehow being mean or unfair to you when they don't want to take a picture with you or let you grab them or listen to you talk. It's also funny because these are often the same people who will go on at length about how there's nothing wrong with comic book characters being drawn wearing next-to-nothing. About how these characters choose to wear these things and about how it makes sense for their personalities (even in cases where it really doesn't).

The second a woman dresses in one of these outfits, however, she's only doing it for male attention. She couldn't possibly like the character's personality or think that the character is awesome.

Spending their fucking money on that. How fucking dare they.

Ya know, honestly, I sorta have the same response to people who endlessly criticize people who read Twighlight or 50 Shades of Gray. Those books are AWFUL, truly AWFUL. And I have no problems criticizing the books, or the authors.

But I'm not quite so egotistical that I have to make myself feel better by acting superior to others due to their personal choices in what they read.

They're shit books, but there's a difference between thinking something's shit, and actively mocking people who read it.

Also, considering that the "fake geek/nerd girl" accusation is being leveled at women in their 20s and 30s as well, you're just demonstrating that your experience isn't relevant to most of the conversation.

I've seen it at it's worst.

Essentially I believe it's mostly comprised of jaded "nice guy" geeks who have so internalized the idea that women hate them because they aren't jerky and jocky that the prospect of women being involved in their hobbies becomes perverse to them. So they lash out by calling them posers and whores.

Of course there are truly poser geeks, but that exists no matter the gender. People who claim they love "that Star Wars tv show with Captain Picard" and what not, but a lot of the maligned women are legitimately interested. Besides "poser" is such a ridiculous notion. We all fake it until we make it, on any subject we begin at zero, if they show an interest even if it's just for show, why discourage it?

My high school had a few younger teachers and you could guess that some of them were kinda nerdy (the young teachers were all recent hires and they were almost all science teachers). They never discussed whether anyone called them fake geeks though. They'd just occasionally make a casual reference to some sort of science fiction and move on with the lesson.

Well, except the one teacher who was in a barbershop quartet. He brought in a tape of his barbershop quartet singing the elements song on some really local talk show, then he performed his part for us live. It was relevant to class though so he could spend some time on it.

I'm well aware that my personal beliefs aren't the most important things in the universe. I don't care if people don't share my ideas, because they don't care about my ideas. But I can still feel however I want, just because someone disagrees with me doesn't mean that I'm wrong or shouldn't feel the way I feel.

Can we take a minute to talk about how stupidly expensive most geek hobbies are?

No one, aside from the trust fund babies and the single nerds with successful careers, can really afford to keep up with an entire comic book series. That shit is expensive. And it gets worse when you realize that you've got to keep a breast of events in other comics, the potential crososvers, etc., to really be following either the DC or Marvel universes.

I work at a multimedia store. I have my regulars who come in just about every week and drop fifty bucks on comics.

And don't get me started on miniature wargames or Magic the Gathering...
