I would argue one can still very much be doing their part/contributing to society without necessarily serving in the military. The farmer tilling the earth and providing the food to fill the soldiers belly and the factory worker forging the weapons of war to arm said soldier are just important and honorable as the soldier who actually eats that food and carries that weapon. Hence my own personal transition away from support of stratocracy and it's replacement with a vaguely tehnocratic idea of what I call a Workers Republic in which if one contributes, aka works, you have a earned a true stake in the success of the nation and as such deserve a say in it's affairs(voting, public office). The overall system at large would be run on roughly syndicalist lines more or less. To put it in simpler terms "you work, you vote".

That just my own personal opinion on that matter though.

Sounds a bit like the medieval idea of the castes of society- the nobles are professional soldiers, the peasants are workers, and the clergy do penance for everyone else's sins. Of course it didn't work like that, but that was the idea.

I identify as liberal, but I should say that political ideology needs to be contextualized. While there are descriptions and definitions that are applicable in the general sense and can be applied globally, there is also a need to specify where and why we identify with what we identify.

So in my case, I actually would say that if I were in the Western world, I would probably be labelled as a right leaning centrist (some might even say I'm a closet conservative), but in the country where I live in where a small level of religious fundamentalism is enshrined in the constitution, I'm considered (and identify as) a liberal. A bleeding heart liberal.

To one in a spectrum, the other is, quite simply put, the "OTHER".

How far? Past the specific case and towards the wholesale overthrow of the presumption of innocence and kneejerk populist/violent overthrow of the existing constitutional arrangements? You need to be able to either overthrow the entire system violently or to enjoy enough support to radically transform the system using the accepted channels.
