I am against transhumanism. I believe humans are good already, and don't need to be fundamentally improved. Transhumanism cheapens life- I see no moral purpose to forcing a species to an impossible standard through the application of invasive techniques. There would be no point in living without dying, no point in creating without destroying, no point in enjoyment without struggles.

All the positive aspects of human life are defined by their opposites. Transhumanism as an ideology wants to modify people so these opposites no longer exist.

Yeah, I think cripples and deaf should stay that way too. They shouldn't have chosen to been born that way, really.

Apparently the limbless veterans are all going to weaponized a la "Steve Austin". Nixon signed it into law when digital calculators became common or something.

I'm personally on the fence about transhumanism. It fits with my spiritual beliefs, but I'm not sure if it is something we should, as a species, pursue.

You reject it on something not entirely unkin to Kant's universalizability test?

Perhaps you might want it allowed to those who chose it, but some corner of existence reserved for those who choose to not go along with with whatever "It" looks like to the naked quivering mind?

Or did Jimmy Carter have a sacred Coyote vision once after being accidentally dosed by a neuro-curaric hyper psychedelic dart that was meant to hit a diplomat behind him who was to shank the Foreign Minister of Belgium's nephew Bertwald?

Well, he does now, yeah. Before, less so. But after the visions...

I am somewhat repulsed by the idea of transhumanism.

I like my organic body, weak and feeble as it can be at times. I also like my organic brain, although it is often times forgetful and edits my memories to make me look better. I like pain sometimes. I like making mental errors at times because fuck-ups make life interesting. Being human means failing, getting sick, being tricked by your own mind. Humanity is imperfection. I know that my life will end sometime within the next sixty years or so. A short life-span forces me to get shit done. I can tell you, I would have zero ambition if I knew that I had two hundred years to accomplish my goals. Transhumanism means giving up what makes me human and becoming instead just a very intelligent cyborg monkey thing. Enjoy the year 2273, I'm not getting out of this century and I like that fact.

This - but in a very strong sense. I'll ditch this body the second something better comes out of beta. Of course, it's only "better" if I get to keep my personality.

I wish I knew. It was on the Transhumanist wiki page, and sounded really cool.

Also, what sort of ethical things prevent further research into the stuff the transhumanist people want to do?

It does sound pretty cool.

I think that technical limitations are all that stand in the way of the transhumanist dream. Ethically I can't think of any limitations, but I'm kinda slow tonight.

Well, some of it has to do with experimentation. There is a wide and dynamic range of discussion in bioethics, that addresses itself to what we should be allowed to do to ourselves, or to others.

For example, right now (and a better informed person, such as a lawyer, please correct me if I'm wrong) I cannot sell my organs to another person in the United States.

Once what we're talking about is a hyper-trans continuum field quanta that you imagined in a dream while thinking of your mother who is now a self-aware colony of nanites floating through deep space and what you should be allowed to do with it, it becomes more complex.
