As something of a transhumanist and a total supporter of techno-progressivism I say no thank you very much.

Besides that - why exactly is it bad they wont know what a video store is?

Kids these need to know how hard we fucking had it back then! If we wanted some damn porn, we had to leave our house, drive to the freaking video store, go to the back to get one, and stare the cashier in the face to buy it, dammit!

I'm coming in late and lazy, have we determined why we're resetting technology only to the mid 80s?

We don't need nor should we have machines that have emotion and can feel things like pain. Beyond that, I don't think we should limit our technological advancement. Reduce how much influence technology like cell phones has in our everyday lives, maybe, but not limit advancement.

Pain is merely an inefficient damage detection system.

Because people have the natural tendency to look at their own childhood through rose-tinted glasses and assume that it was far better than it actually was. The probability that the OP was a child in the mid 80's is very high.

Pain is merely an efficient potential damage detection and reaction system.

You don't understand biology, do you?
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

Maybe for small stuff, but when you are immobilized because the pain is too great and you end up torn to pieces it isn't that great.

This appeals to some of my Lollard tendencies.

I would ban jet planes, except for the air force. No more private het travel. We can get where we are going by other means, with a much smaller carbon footprint. And more quietly too.

Then I would establish a secular sabbath. Not tied to religion, but tied to cooling everybody off instead of keeping the nose to the grindstone 24/7. Let's make it Wednesday. Nobody works on Wednesday except for essential personnel, period. and turn off the lights when the business is closed, just keep one area light for security. No more all night glare from closed gas stations.

Then let's close up shop at a decent hour. As Penfold told Dangermouse when they were looking for the temple of Cheops in Egypt, "It's too late for that, DM, the cheops all close at five," Don't you wish. When I was in Oslo, major capitol city, they rolled up the sidewalk at 7PM, and it felt good, except to my friends who wanted to go clubbing.

Just let's keep the internet; we can use friction energy to charge up our units. Gates has sent thousands of crank-up computers to Africa.
"Life is difficult".

I'm going to put it a little later, if he was a child of the 80s (as I am) he'd also know a world before video stores and wouldn't then think that it's one of those age old institutions lost to this world but instead a blip.

If you actually knew anything about biology, you'd know how ignorant you're sounding. The body's peripheral nervous system (PNS) is an autonomous 'circuit' routed through your spinal cord that instantaneously reacts to pain and damaging stimuli and removes the body from it before you're even aware of it. If you touch a hot kettle on the stove, for instance, the sensory neurons in your hand have sent a signal up your arm, to the spinal cord, back down the arm to a muscle effector neuron and have pulled away your hand before your body even deigns to send the information of 'pain' all the way up to the brain.

More complex endocrine reactions to larger pain, like shock, are meant specifically to help with the 'flight-or-fight' response; it's certainly not immobility or 'overload', by any means. That's almost solely the fault of the fat CEO upstairs, ie consciousness.

I literally just addressed this point, you don't go into pain overload, you go into shock which means you don't notice the pain and can escape the dangerous situation! Pain is obnoxious, but it is actually a pretty decent alarm system.
