Or the student has lied about their age and has a public profile. We caught several students doing naughty things that way.

How so? I would imagine that there are far, far greater threats to childhood liberty than the requirement to wear a certain type of dress.

It makes sense to deprive children of the right to vote; this is not a threat to their liberty.
it makes sense to restrict children from driving. this is not a threat on their liberty.
i can see no logical reason where forcing students to wear uniforms is beneficial in any way except for turning them all into the same person with no individual traits in the effort to be 'fair'.

To prevent students from being bullied because their poverty becomes glaringly obvious.

To prevent students from being bullied because their parents won't allow them to wear what is "cool".

To prevent students from wearing clothing that is offensive to their classmates.

To ensure that students are dressed appropriately and conform to workplace health and safety standards required for their activities.

i can see no logical reason where forcing students to wear uniforms is beneficial in any way except for turning them all into the same person with no individual traits in the effort to be 'fair'.

The parent enrols the student where they want. Once that choice is made, it has to happen. Students under a certain age have no choice.

As far as I am concerned boo-hoo for the students, there are rules and they should respect them. Likewise if the school can find out what they are writing on sites like Facebook that student is either a dork, friends with a nark or FB is violating users privacy again. I cannot vouch for Australia, but once a student is out of uniform the school rules no longer apply to them.

If they are in transit to or from school, the school is legally responsible for them, and therefore school rules apply. If they are using school equipment, the school is legally responsible for that, and so rules apply.

Largely what I thought and is the case here.

The student still has to be at school. If they are under sixteen, I believe, that they aren't able to make such huge decisions themselves. If that is indeed the case than the law does require them to be at school.

That said, as Daistallia 2104 demonstrated it is possible to find definitions broad enough to include all alternatives.

The point being made here, is that some students claimed that it was unfair that they were not being paid by the government to attend school, and could not speak out about the rules imposed on them by said school, because they were forced to attend that school by the government.

Home schooling, paper-only correspondence education, and distance education are all examples of education from prep to year 12 that do not require the student to attend school.
